France’s National Financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF) has placed a woman named Svetlana A., a French citizen of Russian descent, under formal investigation for multiple alleged financial crimes. The case involves organized fraud, laundering the proceeds of tax offenses, and criminal conspiracy. Law enforcement arrested Svetlana in the Alpes-Maritimes region last July. Paris examining magistrates are currently detaining her alongside a British man identified as Robert H., who allegedly acted as a partner in the money laundering operation.
At the heart of the probe is the suspected price manipulation of the Verasity (VRA) crypto token. The pair allegedly orchestrated the token’s market movements to generate illicit profits. Investigators strongly suspect these illegal proceeds did not remain in digital wallets, but were instead funneled into acquiring a luxury real estate portfolio in Dubai valued at over 50 million euros.
Past Price Trail
The alleged price surge occurred during market cycles several years ago. An investigation by French newspaper Le Monde retraced the VRA token’s movements and noted a pattern of sharp spikes. VRA’s value jumped as much as 65-fold in just two and a half months during the spring of 2021 before dropping steeply. Historical market data from CoinGecko shows the VRA token subsequently climbed again, reaching its all-time high (ATH) of $0.08621 on October 31, 2021. However, the token’s price soon crashed from its peak down to its current levels.
Transaction Details Not Yet Disclosed
Although French authorities have detained the two primary suspects, the full mechanics of the alleged price manipulation have not yet been disclosed to the public. Officials have not released detailed evidence regarding specific transactions that moved VRA’s price on exchanges. Investigators have also kept confidential the list of crypto wallet addresses used to hold the tokens, as well as the names of the crypto exchanges used to execute the price manipulation.
At the end of such manipulation schemes, illicit proceeds are almost always moved out of the blockchain ecosystem into cross-border physical real estate to disguise their origins. For retail investors who bought VRA tokens during the peak, news of the investigation sheds light on the actual players behind those market movements.
