Former US Congressman George Santos has received a lifetime ban from prediction market platform Kalshi. The penalty was imposed after he was found to have manipulated betting contracts directly tied to his personal schedule, specifically his attendance at the State of the Union address.
Between February 2 and February 25, Santos executed a series of large trades in the Yes/No contract market regarding whether he would attend the event. Exchange rules prohibit this activity because the subject of the bet has the power to influence its outcome. Beyond placing bets, Santos also made public statements regarding his attendance that were partially false or misleading. This move was designed to sway contract market prices and ensure his betting positions won.
The manipulative strategy generated a profit of $17,839.57. Kalshi responded by slapping him with a $71,356 fine, equal to four times his total illicit profits. During the investigation, the exchange noted that Santos was uncooperative. The enforcement action marks the first lifetime ban Kalshi has ever issued to a former US member of Congress.
One in a Series of Integrity Scandals
The ban on Santos adds to a growing list of integrity scandals that have recently put prediction markets in the spotlight. Not long ago, a White House teleprompter operator was fined for trading based on advance knowledge of Trump’s speech transcripts. Elsewhere, a video editor for YouTuber MrBeast was fired following an investigation into alleged insider trading on Kalshi. Another case involved a US soldier charged over alleged illegal trading on Polymarket.
A Test for Multi-Billion-Dollar Platforms
Kalshi operates as an exchange officially regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Alongside its main rival, Polymarket, both platforms have logged billions of dollars in trading volume over the past year. This wave of manipulation serves as a stark reminder: when betting markets involve substantial sums of cash, insiders will always have an incentive to front-run the outcome.
