Glamsterdam Upgrade to Change Ethereum Gas Fee Rules - Many Wallets and Estimators Face Disruption

The Protocol DevOps team at the Ethereum Foundation has sounded the alarm for infrastructure developers. On Monday, August 17, 2026, the team issued an official warning that several wallets, indexers, and gas estimators are at risk of breaking. The root of the problem lies in the overhaul of the gas calculation model introduced in the Glamsterdam network upgrade.

In response to potential system disruptions, the Ethereum Foundation urged developers to immediately test their products on Plataberget, a public testnet launched on August 13.

The End of the Absolute 21,000 Gas Assumption

The core of this change lies in the implementation of proposal EIP-8037. This new rule introduces a separate state-gas dimension, specifically for operations that create new state. Historically, ETH transfers have always cost a standard 21,000 gas. Now, this rule will no longer apply across the board to all types of transfers.

While ETH transfers to accounts already operating on the network will be kept at the 21,000 gas limit, transfers sent to entirely new account addresses will incur an additional state-gas fee on top of the basic calculation.

This new fee structure is what threatens the stability of legacy software products. Many current developer tools are written with a fixed maximum gas limit. Tools that use such hardcoding are sure to break, and their code must be updated. Revisions are also required for tool providers that only read a single gas dimension, or systems that assume 21,000 gas is always sufficient for all types of ETH transfers.

Upgrade Schedule and Further Overhauls

The Glamsterdam fork is scheduled to go live on the Plataberget network this Thursday. This activation serves as a preliminary step before the upgrade code is deployed to main testnets such as Sepolia and Hoodi. The Plataberget network itself is designed to continue operating for the next few months as a staging testnet dedicated to supporting this upgrade phase.

The gas fee overhaul is just one of several technical updates in Glamsterdam. The network will also implement enshrined proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists. In addition, the smart contract size limit and initialization-code limit have officially been increased in capacity.

Base-level transitions on a blockchain always carry the risk of breaking compatibility for applications running on top of it. For wallet providers and gas estimators, testing today will determine whether their services can survive dual-dimensional fees or break when the main upgrade arrives.
