Hong Kong is bringing the physical standards of banking-grade gold directly into the digital realm. Christopher Hui Ching-yu, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, announced plans to roll out an institutional gold token at Hong Kong FinTech Week on November 2, 2026. The digital token designed under the project represents physical ownership of 400-ounce gold bars - the standard benchmark across institutional bullion markets and major banking settlements.
Transaction valuation for the token will reference HAU, Hong Kong’s official gold pricing benchmark. The initiative builds upon Project Ensemble, an effort led by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) to explore digital assets and tokenized banking deposits. What distinguishes this project is not merely its digital wrapper, but the institutional scale of the underlying asset and the robust interbank architecture supporting it.
Interbank Trials and 24-Hour Settlement Rails
Ant Digital Technologies announced a cross-bank tokenized gold transaction on November 2, 2026, leveraging the Anvita TaaS platform operating on the Jovay Layer-2 network. The pilot transaction featured clearly defined operational roles: Zhaojin Mining served as the physical gold issuer, China Construction Bank (Asia) managed custody and payment processing, while Bank of East Asia and Jetco acted as the receiving institutions.
Payment settlement in the pilot utilized tokenized bank deposits through infrastructure tied to London Good Delivery gold. Alongside the trial, the HKMA upgraded its EnsembleTX infrastructure. This system enhancement enables 12 banks and 20 industry participants to settle tokenized deposit transactions around the clock, 24 hours a day, using tokenized central bank money.
What Has Not Yet Been Disclosed
The Hong Kong government is targeting full operational readiness for a digital central clearing system covering over-the-counter (OTC) gold transactions by the first quarter of 2027. That Q1 2027 target serves as the official timeline for operating an OTC digital gold market. However, multiple operational details have yet to be disclosed to the public.
Authorities have not yet announced the specific issuing institution, the vault locations securing the physical 400-ounce bars, or the official blockchain powering the new project. One detail remains certain: the initiative is strictly reserved for banking institutions, with retail access completely barred.
For retail market participants and individual investors hoping to purchase fractional digital gold from this initiative, the door remains firmly shut. The 400-ounce scale and interbank infrastructure clearly indicate that this transaction framework is built exclusively for institutional players, not everyday digital wallets.
