Kraken Down for Exactly One Hour Amid Crypto Market Panic - Failed Buy Orders and Frozen Withdrawals

Crypto exchange Kraken experienced a trading system outage lasting approximately one hour on Friday, October 30, 2026. The disruption crippled website access and halted customer order execution. The technical glitch struck amid widespread market panic and elevated crypto volatility, just hours after a multi-billion-dollar security breach hit the Binance exchange.

As sharp price movements demanded platform readiness, Kraken’s trading access suddenly stopped responding to incoming orders.

Timeline of the Full One-Hour Outage

Kraken’s official status page noted that an investigation into connectivity and order placement issues began at 02:42 UTC. The disruption spread across the main website, mobile app, and various trading interfaces. The management team subsequently issued an investigation update at 02:55 UTC while remediation was underway.

The issue was fully resolved at 03:42 UTC when Kraken confirmed all systems had returned to normal. The timeframe from the start of the investigation to service recovery lasted exactly 60 minutes.

The list of affected infrastructure spanned multiple operational layers. Beyond the main portal and the Kraken App, the disruption hit application programming interfaces such as the REST API and WebSocket API. Financial Information Exchange, or FIX, connections commonly used by institutional investors were also severed, along with cross-exchange transfers for derivative products.

Orders Fail as Prices Drop

On social media platform X, users voiced frustration over failed order executions. The account urmom.eth reported a string of error messages when attempting to buy crypto assets during the market downturn. At the same time, the account CryptoRhino questioned withdrawal issues after funds suddenly became unavailable in their account.

Crypto trader Yishi reported that the exchange system temporarily switched to post-only mode. This setting held back the execution of new orders before trading access and balance withdrawals were restored to regular status.

The Friday morning glitch occurred one day after Kraken completed scheduled maintenance on October 29. During that maintenance window, which ran from 08:01 to 08:17 UTC, the exchange had also activated cancel-only and post-only modes for 16 minutes.

What Management Has Yet to Explain

Kraken chose not to publicly disclose the full operational impact of the incident. The exchange has yet to release figures on rejected transactions or the total number of accounts affected during the one-hour disruption period.

An in-depth technical explanation regarding the cause of the infrastructure failure has also not been provided by the exchange. Management has yet to detail the initial source of the issue that triggered simultaneous disruptions across their web, mobile, and API gateways.

For crypto market participants, the incident highlights operational risks when market volatility peaks. The speed of executing positions and withdrawing funds from exchanges remains entirely dependent on the technical resilience of platform providers.
