Large Stablecoin Transfers in Thailand Face Scrutiny - Central Bank Targets ‘Gray Money’ Flows by Year-End

The era of large stablecoin transactions passing through Thailand without questions appears to be coming to an end. The Bank of Thailand plans to tighten scrutiny on substantial cash deposits and high-value stablecoin transactions as part of an initiative to stem the flow of hard-to-trace illicit capital.

The rules are straightforward. Customers depositing 5 million baht - roughly $150,000 - or more in cash will be required to declare and document the source of funds. Officials expect the regulations to take effect in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Why Stablecoins Are Under the Spotlight

For the central bank, stablecoins like USDT are no longer just the domain of crypto traders. Pegged to the dollar and capable of moving across borders within minutes outside traditional banking channels, these assets have become an attractive vehicle for moving large sums of capital with minimal trace. This is where the concept of “gray money” comes in - funds that may not strictly be illegal, but whose origins remain murky and evade routine oversight.

By subjecting high-value stablecoin transactions to the same documentation requirements as massive cash deposits, Thailand is effectively closing an existing loophole. The message is clear: large money flows, in any form, must be accounted for.

A Signal for Southeast Asia

This move is not just about Thailand. Southeast Asia is actively working to tighten crypto regulations, and whenever one central bank takes a firm stance, regional neighbors often consider similar measures. For everyday users conducting small transactions, the new rules will likely go unnoticed. However, for those accustomed to moving large sums via stablecoins, the “no questions asked” era appears to be winding down.
