One of Asia’s largest NFT collectors has just taken emergency measures. Machi, a figure better known by his account @machibigbrother, sold his Bored Ape #5715 for 8.3 ETH, equivalent to $15,570. Three years ago, he shelled out 34.17 ETH to purchase the same digital artwork. This transaction represents a loss of over 75%.
This sale at a loss is not part of a routine portfolio rotation, but rather a last resort to patch up thinning liquidity.
Million-Dollar Bet on the Brink
On-chain tracking data released by analyst Lookonchain shows that Machi is holding an ETH long position of 2,800 ETH. With the market price of Ethereum hovering around $1,872, this futures position ties up over $5.2 million in capital. Sharp fluctuations in crypto prices make a position of this size vulnerable to liquidation if the margin is not topped up immediately.
The sale of Bored Ape #5715 provided an instant way to raise cash. Selling assets at a heavy loss is often the only way out for players trapped in risky trading positions. Machi was forced to sacrifice his NFT asset to keep his million-dollar long position alive.
Signs of Drying Cash
Indications of Machi’s financial difficulties are not only evident from his NFT sale. Lookonchain’s transaction logs also recorded withdrawal activity from Binance that was unusually small for a high-level player. He withdrew 1,540 USDC. For ordinary market participants, this figure might seem standard. But for a heavyweight Asian collector with a history of trading thousands of Ethereum, this minor withdrawal is a sign that he needs every bit of remaining liquidity.
Machi has long been known for a history closely tied to various controversies, but his dominance in the NFT market is undeniable. This drying up of cash reserves forced him to act quickly, shifting value from the collectibles market to the futures market in order to survive.
The High Price of Market Volatility
The situation engulfing Machi provides a stark illustration of the vulnerability of digital assets like NFTs under market pressure. Even assets labeled as blue-chips are ultimately judged by how quickly they can be converted into cash during a crisis. When crypto market prices are depressed, high-value NFT holdings can become a burden that must be liquidated immediately.
For retail investors, Machi’s struggles offer a clear warning. When major whales begin dumping rare assets to secure their main bets, the illusion of blue-chip NFT immunity crumbles. The market always seeks the fastest way out, and expensive collections mean nothing when trading positions are threatened with liquidation.
