Magic Eden has officially announced the closure of its NFT trading marketplaces on the Ethereum and Bitcoin blockchains. The move ends the platform’s role as a multichain hub that previously facilitated Bitcoin Ordinals transactions and various popular NFT collections across the Ethereum ecosystem.
This operational shutdown ends the company’s footprint across two of crypto’s largest ecosystems. Magic Eden was previously widely recognized as a pioneer boldly facilitating cross-chain transactions at scale. The platform once served as a key liquidity hub bridging volume for collectors and traders of digital images on both networks.
Trading Volume Continues to Decline
The decision to close the marketplaces did not come without reason. Throughout 2026, global NFT trading volumes have suffered a prolonged slump. Cooling market conditions forced management to rethink the company’s direction to ensure long-term business sustainability. Rather than exhausting resources amid drying liquidity, the company chose to cut its losses.
Waning interest in NFT trading has squeezed margins for many crypto entities. Maintaining an active marketplace for networks of Ethereum and Bitcoin’s scale demands substantial operational and infrastructure maintenance costs. With transaction volumes showing no signs of recovery, shutting down the division became the most logical business move to protect corporate cash flow.
Pivot to Web3 Gambling
The platform’s exit from the NFT market comes alongside a radical strategic pivot. Magic Eden has decided to shift its business direction by dedicating all available resources to the iGaming sector. The company is now targeting the development of online gambling games and various interactive titles powered by web3 infrastructure.
This shift in focus marks a complete transformation from a digital art storefront into an interactive entertainment provider. The iGaming business model offers an activity cycle vastly different from NFT trading, which relies heavily on seasonal collection hype. The new sector was selected for its ability to generate more consistent user engagement rather than relying on the next speculative cycle in digital images.
Magic Eden’s move demonstrates that holding pioneer status means little once market appetite disappears. When a trend clearly cools off, industry players must be willing to dismantle legacy products to chase new and lucrative narratives.
