MetaMask is finally opening the door for machines to help manage portfolios. The Consensys-backed product has released Agent Wallet, a self-custodial crypto wallet that grants AI agents the authority to execute on-chain transactions directly within user-defined limits.
The launch stems from early-stage testing since June 2026 involving the first 200 users. Now, the new wallet is fully operational, supporting integrations with a range of AI assistants, from Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw, Hermes, to OpenCode. These AI agents can be plugged directly to execute commands on the Hyperliquid network and various EVM-compatible chains.
To smooth the way for machines, MetaMask has implemented gas abstraction. This feature cuts technical hurdles that are often a headache in DeFi. Users can pay network fees using the tokens being transferred, eliminating the need to hold each chain’s native token just to pay for gas.
Taming AI Within Reasonable Limits
Handing over a wallet to algorithms naturally carries risks, and the system addresses this with multi-layered guardrails. AI agents are not left to run aimlessly. Wallet owners set their own maximum spending limits, compile white-lists of permitted protocols, and configure their risk profiles.
Two execution modes are available. The first option is Guard Mode, a conservative mode that limits agent maneuvers to standard operations. For those seeking speed, Beast Mode allows AI agents to move freely and execute complex strategies as long as they do not breach the user’s set balance limit.
A second layer of security runs quietly in the background. Every planned movement goes through transaction simulation, automated threat scanning, and protection against MEV (Maximal Extractable Value) maneuvers. As a final safety net, there is a Transaction Protection feature. If a transaction passes all check gates but results in a loss due to a technical vulnerability, the user receives a reimbursement guarantee of up to $10,000 per month.
Catching Up with the Heating Competition
The arena of agent-based smart wallets has accelerated rapidly this year. Coinbase got a head start by releasing Agentic Wallets last February, followed by MoonPay with its MoonAgents product in March, which just expanded to the Telegram ecosystem this July. MetaMask’s move is a direct response to this new trend, especially since Consensys CEO Joe Lubin also holds investments in EthSystems.
For crypto traders, the daily routine is entering a new chapter. The era of staring at screens and clicking confirmations for every minor step is starting to end. Users are now shifting roles to become portfolio managers: set the risk parameters, allocate the capital, and let the machine work rapidly in the market. As reported by Decrypt.
