The UK Parliament is moving quickly. Dozens of Labour MPs are gathering support to force the government to turn a temporary moratorium on crypto political donations into a permanent ban. The move is fueled not just by technical cybersecurity concerns, but by a funding scandal engulfing the rival party, Reform UK, and its leader, Nigel Farage.
According to a report by The Guardian, the amendment has been tabled to the Representation of the People Bill currently under debate in Parliament. Liam Byrne, chair of the parliamentary business committee and the figure behind the crypto ban amendment, stated that Reform UK politicians appear willing to go to “extraordinary lengths” to avoid scrutiny over their funding sources. The amendment had secured at least 20 supporting signatures by Thursday afternoon local time.
The £5 Million Donation Sparking Outrage in Parliament
The root of the issue is quite dramatic. Farage is currently under investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards regarding a £5 million gift from expatriate tycoon Christopher Harborne, received shortly before Farage announced his candidacy as an MP in June 2024. Although the gift was not in cryptocurrency, it was suspicious enough to trigger suspicious activity reports from banks uncertain about tracing the origin of the funds. Farage has denied any wrongdoing.
Suspicion mounted further after it was revealed that Restore Britain, a new party founded by Rupert Lowe, launched with £2.5 million in its account without disclosing where the funds came from. Reform UK itself became the first major British party to accept crypto donations, starting in June 2025-sparking serious debate over loopholes in fund tracking ever since.
Four Amendments to Close All Loopholes at Once
The permanent crypto ban is just one of four amendments proposed by the group of Labour rebels. Anneliese Dodds, a former cabinet minister, proposed slashing campaign spending limits by nearly a third, from £34 million to £24.4 million. Yuan Yang proposed capping the amount of funds new parties can hold upon inception, while Mark Sewards is pushing for strict vetting of donations that could serve as a front for foreign interests seeking to influence British democracy.
The moratorium on crypto donations initially took effect last March after the government-commissioned Rycroft Review warned that the pseudonymous nature of digital asset transfers could be exploited to funnel foreign money into domestic politics. The report’s author, Philip Rycroft, actually recommended only a temporary pause to give regulations time to catch up-not a permanent ban. The Labour rebels’ amendments seek to shut that door permanently, aligning with measures already taken by Ireland and Brazil to completely ban crypto donations to political parties.
This drama underscores that the crypto debate is not just about price and technology, but about who has the right to fund political power-and how far blockchain anonymity can be used to obscure the answer. If these amendments pass, the UK will join the ranks of nations choosing to shut the door completely, rather than merely peering through it.
