POAP Pernah Gaet Coinbase dan Amex - Tapi Kini Tutup Akibat Benturan Bisnis dan Etos Web3

POAP Once Partnered with Coinbase and Amex - But Now Shuts Down Due to Clash Between Business and Web3 Ethos

The five-year journey of one of the most widely used Web3 projects has finally come to an end. Co-founder Isabel Gonzalez announced on August 3, 2026, that POAP (Proof of Attendance Protocol) has officially shut down its operations.

Throughout its lifespan, POAP facilitated the minting of approximately 7.6 million NFT badges issued by more than 46,000 entities. The list of corporate clients that have used its system features big names across various industries, ranging from Coinbase, American Express, and Warner Music Group, to Bayer. However, this roster of clients was not enough to sustain the project’s ongoing operations.

Gradual Retreat Since the Start of the Year

Signs of the journey’s end had already been visible since the start of the year. The platform with ERC-721 specifications has been in maintenance mode since March 16, 2026. At that time, it stopped registering new badge issuers and halted all active development.

This condition stands in contrast to the project’s history, which began at the ETHDenver 2019 event when the POAP team minted only about 100 badges for hackathon participants. Over time, they migrated the network from Ethereum to Gnosis Chain to cut transaction costs. The platform even secured a $10 million funding round in January 2022 led by Archetype and Sapphire Sport.

What Hindered POAP’s Business?

The closure was not due to a lack of market interest. Gonzalez highlighted issues within the crypto funding cycles and distribution dynamics. She mentioned that building a sustainable corporate entity proved difficult without compromising the project’s original ethos.

This case adds to the recent trend of Web3 projects shutting down. Projects such as Uncharted, Fishing Frenzy, and Nike’s digital initiative, RTFKT, have taken similar paths. The pattern is identical: they successfully built a strong community base but failed to formulate a self-sustaining business model.

The Fate of Collections in Users’ Wallets

For collectors of the digital badges, the closure of POAP’s corporate entity does not automatically erase ownership. Already minted tokens will remain in their respective crypto wallets, in line with the nature of onchain assets.

The real test lies in the asset reader infrastructure. Access to view images in the gallery, retrieve data via API, and access the metadata of each POAP now depend on how long the supporting servers will be maintained. As of now, no server shutdown deadline has been announced, and there are no collection migration plans. The assets do belong to the users, but their lifespan is now determined by the remaining life of the legacy infrastructure.
