Polymarket Overhauls 7-Year-Old Smart Contract Engine - Sets Stage for Cross-Chain Expansion

Polymarket is overhauling its core foundations. The prediction market platform began rolling out Protocol V2 on Monday, Oct. 6, 2026. The upgrade replaces its smart contract infrastructure, which previously relied on a codebase dating back to 2019.

Polymarket Head of Protocol Rajath Alex announced the launch of the new system in a post on X. The overhaul centers on collateral standardization, with Protocol V2 establishing Polymarket USD (pUSD) as the sole collateral token across all betting markets on the platform.

The choice fell on pUSD, which is backed 1:1 by Circle’s USDC stablecoin. This collateral token was originally introduced during an upgrade in April 2026.

Flexible Oracle and Contract Systems

Behind the scenes, Protocol V2 introduces a new architectural component dubbed OracleAggregator. This system connects Polymarket’s engine to multiple external oracle providers, including UMA and Chainlink. OracleAggregator acts as the final arbiter to ensure market resolution data is accurate before winnings are distributed.

The V2 smart contracts are now also upgradeable through a secure governance process. This new design reduces developer workload, eliminating the need to deploy smart contracts from scratch whenever new features are added.

Three Web3 security firms - Cantina, Quantstamp, and Zellic - have audited Protocol V2 to ensure its security. Additional formal verification was conducted by Certora. As a safety net, Polymarket is offering a bug bounty program of up to $5 million for critical vulnerability discoveries.

The Road to Cross-Chain Expansion

The transition to Protocol V2 is moving gradually. Polymarket is still conducting testing phases across select live markets through Oct. 30. Its tentative target is Nov. 2 to shift all new market creation to the V2 engine.

Everyday users have no need to worry about the technical changes. Existing betting positions and collateral in legacy markets will not be converted to V2, requiring no migration steps from participants.

Polymarket currently operates fully on the Polygon network, but its new infrastructure is specifically designed for expansion beyond that ecosystem. V2 is built to support the transfer of positions, collateral, and resolution data across multiple different blockchains.

Polymarket management has not yet disclosed which blockchains are targeted for expansion or when cross-chain functionality will go live, but the technical foundation is now in place. Via Cointelegraph.
