Stripe Beli OpenRouter $7 Miliar - Menyatukan Mesin AI dan Pembayaran Kripto

Stripe Acquires OpenRouter for $7 Billion - Uniting AI Engines and Crypto Payments

Stripe has reportedly finalized an acquisition agreement for AI model aggregator OpenRouter worth over $7 billion. First reported by Bloomberg and confirmed by TechCrunch, the deal unites the leading payment engine with an interface connecting hundreds of artificial language models.

This valuation leap comes just three months after OpenRouter closed a $113 million Series B funding round in May 2026. The round, led by Alphabet’s CapitalG, valued the platform at $1.3 billion. This means the startup’s valuation skyrocketed fivefold in just a matter of weeks. The Wall Street Journal also noted on July 23 that Stripe had considered a valuation in the range of $10 billion during early discussions.

As of publication, Stripe has declined to confirm the final agreement. Company representatives refrained from commenting, stating they do not comment on rumors or speculation.

Why Stripe Needs an AI Aggregator

OpenRouter operates as an intermediary infrastructure provider. The platform gives developers a single interface to directly access AI models from major names like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, and many more. Currently, they list over 500 models sourced from more than 80 different providers.

Its data traffic scale has been rising steadily. OpenRouter’s weekly volume reached 25 trillion tokens last May. This figure represents a fivefold growth compared to six months prior. Interestingly, OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah once drew a specific analogy for his company, calling it the ‘Stripe for AI’.

This purchase gives Stripe direct control over the model selection infrastructure on the AI agent side. This is a crucial piece that complements its existing payment settlement system. The Web3 ecosystem also contributes power to its technical operations. io.net, a decentralized GPU network, is listed as one of OpenRouter’s primary inference providers, responsible for processing 4 billion inference tokens daily.

Toward an Autonomous Machine Economy

This acquisition highlights Stripe’s long-term maneuvering in the crypto sector. They had already entered the machine-to-machine payment space through integration with the x402 protocol created by Coinbase. Through this path, AI agent entities can pay for API service usage bills using the USDC stablecoin running on the Base layer-2 network.

This vision is backed by a cross-industry coalition. Stripe currently stands alongside other major technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, AWS, Amex, Mastercard, Visa, and stablecoin issuer Circle. These names are joined as supporters of the x402 Foundation to design and establish standardized guidelines for AI agent payments.

The acquisition of OpenRouter brings all these pieces into the operational phase. In the future, AI agents will not only be able to perform tasks, but will also be free to choose their own language processing engines and pay the fees instantly on a single unified network.
