A token skyrocketed until its fully diluted valuation (FDV) touched $6 billion. While it sounds like a success story, blockchain investigator ZachXBT warns that the staggering figure actually conceals the grim reality of a trend he calls “retail extraction.”
Through his investigation, ZachXBT highlighted the $LAB token, alleging it represents “everything wrong” with how certain recent crypto projects have been draining funds from small investors.
Anatomy of a ‘Retail Extraction’
The series of findings presented is far from trivial. ZachXBT pointed to opaque private loans and OTC transactions, unilateral changes to vesting schedules, alleged coordination with market makers, an unclear circulating supply, and over 95% of the total token supply being controlled by a handful of entities.
That combination is a classic recipe for manipulation. When the vast majority of supply is held by a few hands and the actual amount circulating in the market is minuscule, pumping the price becomes remarkably easy. Retail investors tempted to jump in often only realize they are left holding the bag once the price is finally dumped.
Why the $6 Billion Valuation Is Misleading
FDV, or fully diluted valuation, calculates the value of the entire token supply as if all of it were circulating at the current price. However, when 95% of the supply is locked in the hands of a few individuals, that valuation figure is practically fictitious - it takes only a few thin trades to inflate it, and just a few sales to crash it.
For investors, this case serves as a clear warning sign. Before getting enticed by tokens with bombastic valuations and skyrocketing charts, check who actually holds the supply. A big number on the screen does not always equal real value - sometimes, it is simply a well-crafted trap.
