Donald Trump’s peace claims failed to immediately move price charts. President Trump announced an energy ceasefire deal between Russia and Ukraine on Truth Social on Sunday morning, claiming both sides had agreed. However, oil and crypto markets remained largely unmoved for the first few hours.
The market’s caution proved justified. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially claimed to know nothing about the ceasefire announcement when quoted by Axios. That doubt only eased minutes later when Zelensky posted on his X account that Ukraine supports an energy ceasefire, emphasizing the importance of Russia supporting the move as well.
That statement from Kyiv finally ignited market movement. Bitcoin rose more than 1% to touch $83,900 shortly after Zelensky’s comments circulated on social media. This delayed reaction shows that markets are reluctant to bet on unilateral claims before the warring parties provide open confirmation.
Why the Market Waited for Zelensky
The price spike toward $83,900 immediately triggered a wipeout of contracts on derivatives exchanges. Cointelegraph data showed that $95.72 million in short positions were liquidated as Bitcoin’s price approached the $84,000 level. Traders betting against the market were forced to close their positions as charts abruptly reversed course.
Trump’s announcement of an energy ceasefire is not an isolated event. This marks the second time Trump has made a similar announcement regarding the Russia-Ukraine energy sector without technical details on implementation on the ground. A track record from previous announcements led market participants to hold back trades until tangible certainty emerged from the conflict zone.
Political Stakes Ahead of the Midterms
The timing of the announcement raised eyebrows as the US midterm elections are less than a month away. At the same time, Polymarket data showed the odds of a Democratic sweep of the House and Senate rising to 62%.
Analysts are now divided on the motives behind Sunday morning’s announcement. Some suggest the move could be a pre-election political maneuver to win voter favor, while others see the potential for a genuine peace effort in the energy sector. For now, the true motive behind the maneuver remains unclear.
For crypto market participants, the wipeout of $95.72 million in short positions serves as an immediate reminder of the dangers of leverage when geopolitical headlines break rapidly. As long as a Russia-Ukraine peace deal lacks binding terms, price rallies driven by social media posts carry an equally sharp risk of reversal.
