Social media platform X has begun rolling out X Money to Premium and Premium+ subscribers in the United States, offering up to 6% APY on deposits and 3% cashback. The product bundles FDIC-insured accounts, free instant peer-to-peer payments, an X Card Visa debit card, and direct deposit access up to two days early. The company stated this makes X the first US social media platform to integrate all of these banking features into a single product.
The core infrastructure is powered by Cross River Bank, which manages regulatory compliance and banking interfaces. Through this partnership, individual deposits automatically qualify for the standard $250,000 FDIC insurance coverage. The service also includes a cash sweep program that distributes customer funds across a network of partner banks, expanding total FDIC coverage up to $10 million. Users gain access to a full suite of conventional banking services, including wire transfers, check writing, fee-free ATM withdrawals, and dedicated customer support channels.
Realizing the 2022 Vision Without Cryptocurrency
The vision of turning the platform into a financial hub was first laid out by Elon Musk in the early days of his 2022 acquisition. Over the following years, X steadily paved the way by securing money transmitter licenses across more than 40 US states. Yet despite the long anticipation, the debut banking product launched today is completely devoid of decentralized features: offering no support for Bitcoin, Dogecoin, stablecoins, or any form of crypto custody.
This strictly non-crypto approach aligns with Musk’s established stance. In 2023, he responded to speculation regarding a native X token with a brief remark stating that he “never will” create one. The decision to launch X Money with an exclusive focus on traditional fiat currency dismisses longstanding expectations among certain circles who had hoped for deep Web3 integration at the core of the social media app.
Who Can Access It Now
The initial phase of X Money remains strictly limited to top-tier paid subscribers in its home market. The company has not provided a timeline for expanding the feature to free-tier users, let alone any plans for international rollout. While Cross River’s technical infrastructure provides ample capacity to handle transaction volumes from X’s massive user base, taking the service across borders faces complex regulatory and licensing hurdles that cannot be resolved overnight.
For dedicated Dogecoin enthusiasts monitoring every X update in anticipation of payment integration for their favorite meme coin, today’s announcement delivers a reality check. X’s financial engine has finally come online, but its rails steer entirely clear of cryptocurrency. Source: crypto.news.
