Toyosa, the official Toyota dealership in Bolivia, officially opened Bitcoin payment rails for vehicle purchases starting September 18, 2026. The announcement at the Expocruz 2026 auto show in Santa Cruz adds to their payment options, alongside Bolivian bolivianos, US dollars, and the Tether (USDT) stablecoin. The service expansion makes Toyosa one of the first car dealerships in Latin America to accept Bitcoin directly to take home a Japanese-brand vehicle.
The Financial Infrastructure Behind the Checkout
Exactly one year ago in September 2025, the car dealership actually began accepting USDT payments through the same operating system. The addition of Bitcoin now expands the roster of payment options by relying on infrastructure from two financial entities.
BitGo Bank & Trust provides the institutional digital wallet infrastructure powering Toyosa’s Bitcoin payment system, while Towerbank acts as a supporting financial partner. BitGo publicly confirmed its involvement on September 20, 2026. BitGo’s official event calendar also shows its presence at Expocruz from September 18 to 21, corroborating the partnership for launching this car purchase program.
Transaction Mechanism and Unanswered Details
For now, the existing crypto payment workflow at Toyosa is designed to be straightforward. Customers first receive a price quotation document for their desired vehicle. After approving the amount, the buyer simply selects a blockchain network supported by the system and completes the payment by scanning a QR code from their own crypto wallet.
However, the Bitcoin payment option has not yet been accompanied by online technical updates. As of September 20, 2026, the payment page on Toyosa’s website has not been updated and still only contains workflow guidelines specifically for USDT transactions.
There is no public information yet regarding which Bitcoin wallet types are valid and supported by BitGo’s system at the dealership. The public has also not been informed of how many block confirmations are required for a car payment transaction to be finalized, the methodology for determining the fiat-to-crypto exchange rate when the code is scanned, or whether purchase caps apply.
Accepting Bitcoin for high-value products like new cars highlights the growing real-world utility of crypto as a medium of exchange, though procedural transparency at the consumer level appears to still be lagging behind the official rollout.
