Twelve years ago, on August 28, 2014, the cryptography world lost one of its foremost figures. Today marks the anniversary of the passing of Hal Finney, who passed away after battling ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) for years. His departure left a permanent mark on on-chain history: his role as the first person in the world to receive a Bitcoin transaction.
His mark on the blockchain ledger was made on January 12, 2009. On that date, Finney interacted with Satoshi Nakamoto and received a transfer of 10 BTC. This transfer became the first recorded Bitcoin transaction since the network was launched. A day earlier, on January 11, 2009, Finney published a two-word post reading “Running Bitcoin” on Twitter. This short message became the first public confirmation that the new network’s software client was indeed running on his computer.
Veteran Cryptographer and Standard Setter
Finney’s technical expertise in digital privacy had been proven decades before decentralized payment networks emerged. He built a long track record as a veteran cryptographer and dedicated his skills as a developer of PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). His involvement in this encryption system project cemented his role in shaping digital communication security standards.
From message protection, his research expanded into electronic cash through the development of a reusable proof-of-work system. This innovation provided a functional foundation that operated well before the Bitcoin protocol was released. His early concept became a technical cornerstone for cryptographic transaction settlement mechanisms.
The Choice of Cryopreservation at Alcor
Finney’s medical battle against ALS led to an end-of-life decision aligned with his vision. In accordance with his final wishes, Finney’s body is currently cryopreserved by the Alcor Life Extension Foundation. The facility keeps the cryptographer’s physical body at ultra-low temperatures to preserve it in a static state.
Preserving his body at the Alcor facility marked the final chapter for the first person to respond to Nakamoto’s system. The 10 BTC sent during that test now accompanies the long journey of global digital asset adoption.
