Peluang 80% Soft Fork Bitcoin Mengarah ke BIP-54 - Tanpa Fitur Baru, Pengembang Pilih Bersihkan Bug Warisan

80% Chance Bitcoin’s Next Soft Fork Is BIP-54 - No New Features, Developers Opt to Clean Up Legacy Bugs

An 80% probability is now pointing toward a single network upgrade: Matt Corallo, co-author of BIP-54 and a longtime Bitcoin developer, estimates that the next soft fork will be the “Great Consensus Cleanup.” Proposed in 2019, the initiative adds no new features. Instead, its goal is to clean up technical debt by patching four legacy bugs in Bitcoin’s consensus rules.

Corallo emphasized that this upgrade is not an emergency response to threats like quantum computing. Rather, it is routine maintenance, following developer consensus that the protocol issues are genuine. Yet beneath its technical nature, the proposal plays a critical role in the future of network governance.

Four Legacy Vulnerabilities Targeted for Patching

The core focus of BIP-54 targets unresolved technical flaws in the consensus rules. The four vulnerabilities in question range from issues in the network difficulty adjustment mechanism to denial-of-service (DoS) attack risks among miners.

The lack of new functionalities has led some to view the plan as unremarkable. Paul Sztorc, CEO of LayerTwo Labs, characterized the potential BIP-54 upgrade as leaning toward “janitorial work,” offering no breakthrough features for end users.

Despite offering no functional breakthroughs, technical support remains robust. When Sztorc conducted an informal poll at the TABconf conference in Atlanta, a majority of developers predicted BIP-54 would be selected as the next soft fork. Regarding activation timelines, the earliest projection points to September 2027, while most votes favored 2028 or later.

A Dry Run Without Reliving Political Drama

The push to pass BIP-54 has gained momentum following the post-Taproot ecosystem dynamics after its 2021 activation. Since that upgrade went live, the Bitcoin ecosystem has grappled with consensus gridlock, raising fears of network ossification. Several proposals to add functionality, such as OP_CAT (BIP-347) and OP_CHECKTEMPLATEVERIFY (BIP-119), remain stalled amid contentious debates among stakeholders.

In light of this stalemate, Corallo views BIP-54 as a vital social and technical rehearsal. The process offers a new generation of developers an opportunity to establish standard soft fork activation procedures without getting dragged back into past political drama.

For today’s developer community, activating BIP-54 serves as a test: whether coders can agree on a shared consensus upgrade path, or if the post-Taproot gridlock will drag on even longer.
