Ripple and Absa Corporate and Investment Banking launched “Absa Digital Asset Custody” in South Africa on September 21, 2026. The bank-grade asset security product is now officially operational to facilitate institutional clients, nearly a year after the announcement of their initial partnership on October 15, 2025.
Since October 2025, Absa has been recognized as Ripple’s first major custody partner on the African continent. Ripple Custody technology is now fully operational, serving clients as a digital asset security and private key management facility for large-scale entities.
Securing Crypto and Tokenized Assets
Absa describes its service as a digital asset security environment tailored to regulatory standards for institutional clients. Through its control panel, clients can manage asset protection access, monitor transactions, and maintain control over internal approval workflows.
Ripple’s Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa, Reece Merrick, described the product line’s activation as a major milestone for institutional digital asset adoption in the African region. The bank-grade custodian is set to accommodate storage services for pure cryptocurrencies and a diverse array of tokenized assets.
Technical details of the platform integration were outlined by Robyn Lawson, Head of Digital Product for Custody at Absa CIB. The new system from their partnership integrates the reliability of Ripple’s blockchain transaction execution with the bank’s internal security systems.
Key Protection with No Single Point of Failure
To minimize hacking risks, private key storage is housed entirely within a secure hardware environment. The separation of physical and digital layers limits the impact of malfunctions, ensuring that a single point of failure cannot compromise client balances.
The system’s defense architecture also implements deterministic key derivation to generate the access chains protecting the digital wallets used by each institution. As the first crypto custodian in Africa with bank-grade security guarantees powered by Ripple technology, the platform is now poised to pioneer new flows of institutional capital adoption.
