The power of money in politics has its limits. After losing its campaign investment in Michigan, pro-crypto political action committee (PAC) Fairshake and its two affiliates, Defend American Jobs and Protect Progress, have poured in over $1.5 million. These funds are aimed at financing political ads in the primary elections of Florida, Alaska, and Wyoming ahead of August 18, 2026.
This new spending comes in response to the bitter defeat of Protect Progress in Michigan’s 13th district. There, Democratic incumbent Shri Thanedar was defeated by his challenger, Donavan McKinney, despite Thanedar’s campaign having previously been backed by a $2 million ad spending injection from the same PAC.
Risk-Spreading Strategy Across Three Fronts
This new tactical move distributes the remaining campaign momentum to several candidates across multiple regions to minimize the risk of failure. In Alaska, the affiliate Defend American Jobs spent over $500,000 to support the reelection bid of Republican Representative Nick Begich.
A similar amount was allocated to two other regions. The budget is aimed at supporting the campaign of Republican candidate Sydney Gruters, who is running in Florida’s 16th district. At the same time, strong support is flowing to Wyoming Representative Harriet Hageman, who is now aiming for a seat in the United States Senate.
Although mostly targeting Republican politicians, the Democratic camp was not forgotten. Protect Progress also poured in over $50,000 in campaign funds to pave the way for Lois Frankel’s reelection in Florida’s 23rd district.
Mission to Pave the Way for Crypto Market Regulations
All candidates supported by these ad funds share one absolute commonality: a pro-crypto track record or written commitment. Begich, Frankel, and Hageman have previously expressed their support for passing the GENIUS Act and the CLARITY Act in Congress.
Elsewhere, Gruters also confirmed his stance in favor of the CLARITY Act. He stated this while filling out an official questionnaire from the non-profit advocacy organization Stand With Crypto.
Stand With Crypto makes no secret of their intentions, stating that passing crypto market structure regulations is the industry’s primary goal for 2026. The ambition to create this legal framework is backed by significant capital. Since the start of the 2024 United States election cycle, the Fairshake network has spent over $170 million in capital.
Their targets are specific and nationwide: targeting seats in the 435 House districts and the 33 Senate seats up for election this year.
The Limits of Money in Politics
The defeat of the incumbent they backed in Michigan illustrates that endless funds do not always secure a victory. Fairshake and its affiliates learned an important lesson from that event: millions of dollars can vanish in vain when local public sentiment shifts strongly against the candidate’s figure.
Ahead of mid-August, this network of crypto lobbying groups is betting that spreading funds across various districts will yield more predictable results than focusing resources on a single region.
