With ETH trading around $2,240 and new coin issuance outpacing burns due to declining mainnet activity, Vitalik Buterin has pushed back against Ethereum’s valuation narrative. The network’s co-founder stated that ETH should be valued as a store of value, decentralization, security, and resistance to external control, rather than simply relying on transaction fee burns.
Debate surrounding ETH’s economic fundamentals has intensified after burn volumes dropped sharply following the Dencun upgrade in March 2024, which shifted most transaction activity to low-cost layer-2 solutions. Vitalik emphasized that the EIP-1559 mechanism must remain in place. However, he questioned whether reducing supply through transaction fee burns can be continuously relied upon to support the crypto asset’s market valuation.
A $25 Billion Simulation Built on Speculation
Vitalik criticized market analysts’ economic models that treat ETH like a conventional business asset, calculating valuations from recurring fee revenue streams. Through a simulation, he dissected a scenario of $1 billion in annual coin burns with a 4% discount rate. On paper, that calculation justifies a $25 billion market valuation. The problem is that the model is seen as fragile because network fee revenue is heavily dependent on the ebbs and flows of crypto market speculation.
The model’s fragility is rooted in market cycles. Between 2021 and 2023, millions of ETH were burned due to high transaction fees from speculative NFT and DeFi trading driven by internal capital rotation within the crypto industry. Once market prices fell, fee spending plummeted alongside them. Vitalik also noted that the arrival of accredited real-world assets (RWAs) on Ethereum will not be able to reproduce the extreme fee spikes seen during previous NFT trading euphoria.
The 700,000 ETH Annual Risk of Corporate Governance
Steering Ethereum into a revenue-oriented entity like a commercial corporation carries severe technical consequences. Vitalik estimated that the protocol would require around 700,000 ETH per year for research and development (R&D) and interventionist governance if forced to operate like a profit-seeking firm. Such a policy direction risks driving up mainnet gas fees and restricting access for users who require privacy.
Open Backing from Solana Founder
Vitalik’s view on the fallacy of chasing transaction fees was warmly received by rival camps. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko voiced open support on platform X, stating that treating network transaction fees as a primary product is pointless, and that blockchain developers should instead focus on delivering the best service to users.
For ETH holders, this narrative shift establishes a clear boundary: the network’s strength is once again anchored in the reliability of decentralization and system security, rather than the pursuit of short-term transaction fees.
