BitMEX Tutup Usia Setelah 12 Tahun - Tapi Token BMEX Anjlok 90% Sejam Sebelum Pengumuman Resmi

BitMEX Shuts Down After 12 Years - But BMEX Token Plummets 90% an Hour Before Official Announcement

BitMEX ceased operations on Thursday, July 23, 2026, via a post on platform X. A name synonymous with the early days of the crypto derivatives industry, the exchange has closed its doors after nearly 12 years of operation.

However, an unusual detail remains in the market. The price of its utility token, BMEX, crashed nearly 90% from the $0.06 range within hours. This sell-off was apparently not a reaction to the shutdown news. Asset tracking data shows that BMEX began tumbling at 07:00 UTC - a full hour before management released an official statement to the public. Certain parties dumped their positions well before the broader market realized what was happening.

Failed $1 Billion Sale

The platform’s shutdown closes an important chapter in crypto history. The exchange was widely recognized as a derivatives pioneer. When celebrating its 11th anniversary in November 2025, management reiterated the company’s historical role in inventing the perpetual swap format. These futures contracts without expiration dates broke conventional trading boundaries and became the primary engine of market liquidity today.

That track record was not enough to sustain the company’s recent performance. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju released data revealing just how diminished the platform’s market share had become ahead of its closure. BitMEX’s Bitcoin futures market share had shrunk drastically to just 0.08%. Daily trading volume stalled at $84 million, a modest figure compared to modern derivatives exchanges dominating the market today.

Blockchain analytics firm 10x Research revealed that BitMEX’s owners had explored alternative exits before the final decision. They explored a potential sale of the exchange at a $1 billion valuation in 2025. However, negotiations failed to produce a final deal, forcing management to proceed with an orderly shutdown of the platform.

Passing the Baton

The shutdown drew reactions from industry veterans familiar with BitMEX’s legacy. Ki Young Ju shared a farewell note on X, reflecting that the exchange laid critical foundations for today’s crypto industry structure.

“It now passes the baton to the next generation of exchanges it once inspired,” Ki Young Ju noted in his statement.

BitMEX’s exit from the competitive landscape closes the opening chapter of crypto derivatives history. While the creator of the instrument steps off the stage, the perpetual swap product it birthed continues to drive billions of dollars in trading volume for its competitors. BitMEX has officially powered down its servers, but the non-expiring trading engine it created lives on, powering trades across the global market.
