Autonomous AI agents have recorded 1.4 million transactions on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) with total network fees amounting to just around $280. The average fee per transaction in the ecosystem hovers around $0.0002, or two-hundredths of a cent - an amount that enables bots to make purchases and pay for digital services without any human intervention.
This machine-to-machine traffic operates via x402, an open protocol designed by Coinbase. The protocol essentially revives the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code - a 1990s internet system error warning that had never been utilized in the real world. Thanks to the development of x402, artificial intelligence entities can now send micropayments directly using data embedded in HTTP headers, without needing bank accounts, credit card numbers, or human authorization to settle transactions.
The economic potential of autonomous bots quickly led to the formal institutionalization of the x402 standard. On July 14, the x402 Foundation was officially launched under the auspices of the Linux Foundation. Ripple joined as a premier member alongside approximately 40 other tech and financial firms, including AWS, Google, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Circle, and initiator Coinbase.
Trailing 100-Fold
The backing of major industry names has not immediately propelled XRPL to the forefront. The 1.4 million AI transactions it achieved still trail behind primary rivals in the race for autonomous infrastructure.
Coinbase’s Base leads the market with over 119 million processed x402 payments. Solana ranks second with around 35 million transactions. These two rival networks hold a nearly hundredfold lead over the volume of AI agents operating on XRPL.
Ripple’s engineering team is well aware of where they stand. “The potential was obvious, but the tooling and the standards were still emerging,” said J. Ayo Akinyele, head of engineering at RippleX.
To bridge the gap, Ripple is ramping up developer tooling. The company released the XRPL AI Starter Kit in June, followed by the launch of the XRPL AI Hub built on the t54.ai platform. XRPL possesses adequate technical capabilities to handle high transaction volumes: 3-5 second settlement times with fixed fees, alongside built-in native escrow and multi-signature features at the base layer. AI transactions on the ledger also support settlements in both XRP and the RLUSD stablecoin.
The Next Step Is More Than Just Low Fees
Ripple’s seat at the table with institutions like Visa and Google in the x402 Foundation underscores an emerging infrastructure trend: future financial systems will not only serve humans, but also code negotiating with code.
For XRPL, the challenge is no longer just about offering low fees. Developers on Coinbase Base and Solana have proven that turnkey ecosystems are more appealing to AI bot creators. While XRPL’s 3-5 second finality is already proven to work, its main task now is capturing market share among autonomous machines that have already settled comfortably on competing networks.
