Crypto Keys Threatened by 20x Faster Quantum Machines - Here Is How Bitcoin and Ethereum Are Responding

Three European Union financial watchdogs have voiced a unified warning regarding blockchain security. The European Banking Authority (EBA), European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), and European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) issued a joint statement addressing the threat of quantum computing. These high-performance machines are seen as potentially capable of undermining the cryptographic systems that currently secure transactions, cross-user communications, and database structures across various crypto networks.

The warning comes alongside newly published data regarding leaps in machine capabilities. In March 2026, Google Quantum AI published research that moved the projected timeline of the threat significantly closer. The study indicated that breaking cryptographic algorithms used by many of the world’s crypto assets might require up to 20 times fewer physical qubits than previously estimated.

How Future Machines Could Hijack Private Keys

The core issue lies in how cryptographic keys operate and the exposure of public keys. Future quantum computers are believed to possess enough computational power to solve underlying mathematical security algorithms and derive private keys directly from public keys visible on blockchain ledgers. Once those calculations are complete, attackers could authorize transactions and move digital assets without permission from the original owner.

Despite sounding urgent, the warning from the three European authorities includes a dose of reality. As of writing, no computer in the world possesses the specifications required to execute such complex attacks. The quantum threat remains a future projection, and the available time is being utilized by major networks to prepare new defense protocols.

Deadlines and Major Network Upgrades

Within the Bitcoin ecosystem, Jameson Lopp along with five other core developers submitted a mitigation plan through a proposal in February 2026. They proposed deprecating the current cryptographic signature format to close attack vectors. The plan also sets a deadline on fund movements, where legacy coins that have not migrated to the new system could only be transacted for up to five years after the proposal is activated. As of the European regulators’ warning, the proposal by Lopp and his group has not yet been adopted by the Bitcoin network.

Meanwhile, the Ethereum Foundation has established a structured upgrade timeline. The core development team aims to embed quantum resistance across their entire network architecture - from the execution layer and consensus layer to the data layer - targeting completion by December 2029.

Early proof of concept has emerged from layer-2 networks. StarkWare has conducted live operational trials on mainnet to process Bitcoin transactions designed to withstand quantum attacks. StarkWare’s tests demonstrate that quantum-resistant protocols can be validated in real-world environments before the actual threat arrives at the main networks.
