Family Held Hostage for 9 Hours Over $8M in Crypto - Texas Brothers Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison

Crimes targeting crypto holders are increasingly crossing into the realm of real-world physical intimidation. Two brothers from Waller, Texas, Raymond Christian Garcia and Isiah Angelo Garcia, have been sentenced to a combined 326 months in prison for an armed robbery at a residence in Grant, Minnesota.

U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank in St. Paul sentenced Raymond Garcia to 180 months (15 years) and Isiah Garcia to 186 months (15.5 years) in prison. The ruling follows the defendants’ guilty pleas in June 2026 for the premeditated assault aimed at draining the victim’s digital wallets.

The threat facing digital coin holders is increasingly shifting from software vulnerabilities to the danger of direct violence on their doorsteps.

Held at Gunpoint and Forced to Northern Cabin

Court documents reveal that the two perpetrators drove from Texas to Grant, Minnesota, before breaking into the victim’s home on September 19, 2025. Inside the house, they bound all family members using zip ties and held them at gunpoint.

The hostage ordeal lasted for more than nine hours. During that time, the brothers coerced the father into surrendering login access to his crypto asset accounts.

When the initial transfer fell short of the targeted amount, the perpetrators forced the father to drive to the family’s cabin in northern Minnesota to retrieve additional physical hardware wallets. Under gunpoint, the victim was forced to transfer crypto assets with a total value exceeding $8 million.

Arrested Near Houston Following 911 Call

The perpetrators’ spree was halted when one of the victim’s children managed to call 911. Realizing law enforcement’s arrival was imminent, Raymond and Isiah fled the scene.

Their escape was short-lived. Law enforcement apprehended both suspects near Houston, Texas, shortly after the incident.

Prosecutor Daniel Rosen and FBI Agent Christopher Dotson strongly condemned the perpetrators’ actions. Law enforcement described the assault as a premeditated crime that breached the privacy of a family home to satisfy financial greed. The lengthy prison sentences reaffirm authorities’ commitment to cracking down on physical violence targeting digital asset owners.

The Danger of Physical Attacks for Crypto Owners

The case sets a firm law enforcement precedent against wrench attacks - a term describing direct physical violence aimed at forcing asset holders to hand over their private keys or wallets.

Chainalysis data recorded at least 46 incidents of physical violence related to crypto robberies in the first half of 2026. Across dozens of these real-world robberies, total losses suffered by asset owners exceeded $30 million.

For digital asset holders, the criminal case offers a stark reminder: asset protection does not rely solely on complex passwords or two-factor authentication, but also on diligence in safeguarding financial privacy so as not to invite danger to one’s home.
