HSBC Bawa RedCoin ke 3,3 Juta Pengguna PayMe - Saldo di Luar Jaminan Deposito

HSBC Brings RedCoin to 3.3 Million PayMe Users - Balances Excluded From Deposit Protection

HSBC has released its first Hong Kong dollar-denominated stablecoin, dubbed RedCoin under the ticker RCHKD. The digital token is integrated directly into the PayMe wallet app. More than 3.3 million PayMe users are scheduled to be able to activate RedCoin wallets over the coming days, marking the first time a major bank has brought a stablecoin directly to millions of retail customers in Hong Kong.

The token can be used for peer-to-peer transfers as well as merchant payments across more than 100,000 PayMe partner merchants. RedCoin is pegged 1:1 to the Hong Kong dollar, backed by high-quality liquid assets held in segregated accounts.

Private Ledger Without Deposit Protection

RedCoin does not run on an open public blockchain, operating instead on HSBC’s own private distributed ledger. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued stablecoin license code FRS02 to HSBC on April 10. A similar license, coded FRS01, was granted to Standard Chartered’s Anchorpoint Financial. Unlike Anchorpoint, which launched its HKDAP token in August with circulation limited to institutional players, HSBC is targeting the broader consumer market from the outset.

Despite being issued by a commercial bank, RedCoin wallet balances fall outside Hong Kong’s Deposit Protection Scheme. In terms of reserve transparency, the first independent examination of the backing assets is scheduled to be released after the fourth quarter of 2026 through an official attestation report.

From Checkout Payments to Mutual Funds

“Integrating a stablecoin into a platform that users are already familiar with removes the need for separate wallets or exchanges,” said Vincent Chok, CEO of First Digital, the issuer of the FDUSD stablecoin.

The PayMe rollout is just the initial step. Toward the end of this year, HSBC plans to embed the RedCoin wallet into its primary mobile banking app in Hong Kong, while gearing up for corporate and institutional transactions under a wholesale framework. Customers will also eventually be able to purchase tokenized investment products, including a new share class of HKD-denominated money market funds with a minimum investment starting from HK$100.

A Key Distinction in Digital Wallets

For PayMe users, RedCoin offers seamless transfers and shopping without requiring an understanding of Web3 technicalities. However, the lack of coverage under the deposit protection scheme is an important caveat: balances in this wallet represent bank-issued token assets, not conventional savings accounts.
