HSBC’s RedCoin stablecoin has attracted 50,000 users since officially launching on October 23, 2026. The initial growth figures for the token, bearing the ticker RCHKD, were revealed directly by HSBC Group CEO Georges Elhedery while addressing financial industry stakeholders at Hong Kong FinTech Week.
The digital token is pegged 1:1 to the Hong Kong dollar. Its distribution is directly linked to the 3.3 million user base of HSBC’s PayMe wallet app. Through the wallet, customers can send peer-to-peer transfers or pay at more than 100,000 merchant partners with no minimum balance requirements.
Pure Cash Reserves and Banking Integration Plans
RedCoin’s backing structure is detailed in the bank’s official reserve report as of November 2, 2026. Banking data indicates that RedCoin’s circulation stands at HK$87.75 million, backed by HK$88.75 million in reserve assets held entirely in pure cash. This composition leaves a reserve surplus of HK$1 million. Over the past seven days, the token’s circulating supply expanded by HK$6.75 million.
RedCoin operates on a private, permissioned blockchain powered by Hyperledger Besu technology. HSBC is not stopping at retail payment networks; the bank is preparing to integrate RedCoin into the HSBC HK Mobile Banking app while providing customers access to purchase tokenized money market investment products.
Repo Trials and Government Debt Securities
Commercial adoption growth is moving hand in hand with steps taken by local regulators. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), through Chief Executive Eddie Yue, officially upgraded the EnsembleTX infrastructure to a 24/7 instant settlement phase utilizing tokenized central bank money instruments.
The HKMA confirmed that dealers have concluded secondary market trials for Exchange Fund Bills, short-term Hong Kong government debt instruments issued in tokenized format. The local financial regulator is now preparing to include licensed stablecoins in repo transactions and secondary trading of those government debt securities.
These follow-up trials depend on the readiness of licensed issuers in the local jurisdiction. HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial - a consortium formed by Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands, and HKT - are the first two entities to obtain stablecoin issuer licenses from the HKMA since April 10, 2026.
For capital market participants and digital wallet holders in Hong Kong, this integration begins bridging two ends of the transaction spectrum: everyday consumer liquidity at merchant registers is now poised to connect directly with interbank money market settlement systems.
