Kyobo Life and SBI Pilot Won-Yen Stablecoin - Proving US Dollar No Longer Essential in Cross-Border Transactions

South Korea’s Kyobo Life Insurance and Japan’s SBI Group have completed a pilot project exchanging Won and Yen stablecoins directly on the Canton Network infrastructure. The joint trial was designed to bypass traditional foreign exchange routes that have long required the US dollar as an intermediary in cross-border currency transactions.

The new transaction structure demonstrated by Kyobo Life and SBI proves the operational viability of direct institutional local currency exchange without intermediate conversions. Removing the US dollar route eliminates several foreign exchange stages while curbing institutional settlement costs that routinely burden cross-border capital movements.

Covering the Full Transfer Lifecycle

The simulation conducted by both entities went beyond a single-stage value transfer test. The pioneering trial covered the full lifecycle of institutional fund transfers from start to finish. The process began with the foreign exchange execution phase to transfer Won-to-Yen stablecoin value across digital ledgers without tapping third-party currency liquidity.

The exchange phase was supported by real-time data tracking, allowing sending and receiving institutions to monitor settlement status without reconciliation delays. The workflow concluded with cross-border final settlement, where the Canton Network recorded simultaneous exchange finality for both parties.

Why Insurers Need Blockchain

The testing phase was conducted entirely using test tokens on the Canton Network and did not involve real customer funds under management. Kyobo Life’s decision to complete this technical simulation marks the first operational move by a South Korean insurer into institutional stablecoin adoption.

Kyobo Life’s involvement highlights how the push for cross-border settlement cost efficiency is reaching long-term asset managers. Insurers’ margins, previously eroded by third-party conversion layers, could now be fully preserved through closed-loop exchanges between the Won and Yen.
