The mechanical hum echoing up to one kilometer away brought an end to a hidden crypto mining operation in the Sierra Norte mountains of Puebla. The Mexican Attorney General’s Office, the Mexican Navy, and the Puebla Public Security Secretariat recently raided a building on a secluded road in the Tlaola region. Located roughly two kilometers from the nearest village, authorities seized around 300 graphics processing units (GPUs) serving as the main machinery for the illegal crypto farm. The clandestine mining facility intentionally operated in close proximity to hydroelectric infrastructure.
The equipment confiscated from inside the building showed the operation was far from a casual home setup. The joint task force discovered a pad-mounted transformer, approximately 80 medium-voltage terminals, and eight satellite antennas to support network connectivity. The presence of specialized transformers and medium-voltage terminals strongly indicates that the facility had direct access to industrial-scale power supplies. To date, authorities have not released official figures regarding the total power consumption measured at the site.
Puebla Security Chief Francisco Sánchez González noted that the facility ultimately drew law enforcement suspicion due to three primary factors. Massive electricity draw, a secluded mountain location, and loud operational noise from the machinery heard by local residents all served as key warning signs that triggered the investigation.
Fourth Operation in 2025
The dismantling of the GPU farm in Tlaola adds to an expanding list of local law enforcement operations. The bust marks the fourth raid on similar illicit operations across the Puebla region since early 2025. Armed with physical evidence from the scene, the police investigation is now focusing on suspected electricity theft from the nearby hydroelectric plant, alongside tracing potential money laundering activities.
Although mountainous regions in Mexico often overlap with criminal activity, official law enforcement reports did not publicly name any organized crime syndicates financing the facility. Investigators are still examining the origins of the eight satellite dishes and hundreds of GPUs lined up at the site.
Financial Backers Disappear Without a Trace
The seizure of hundreds of high-value hardware units raises fresh questions. By the time authorities cleared the raid site, no arrests of suspects or warehouse caretakers had been announced. Law enforcement agencies also did not disclose which cryptocurrency was being mined by the GPU arrays before the facility was abruptly disconnected from the grid.
Building a facility equipped with its own transformer, 80 voltage terminals, and satellite connectivity along an isolated mountain road required substantial capital. While hundreds of pieces of hardware now sit in state evidence lockers, the financiers behind this power-siphoning crypto farm appear to have fled long before authorities arrived.
