Shiba Inu Airdrop Claims Circulate on October 12 - Official Team Confirms Wallet Drainer Trap

A fake airdrop link exploiting the Shiba Inu name circulated widely on October 12, 2026. Rather than distributing free tokens, the promotion was an outright scam after the official SHIB development team confirmed that no coin distribution exists.

The warning from the development team was concise and direct. Project administrators posted an unambiguous message: ‘no such airdrop. this is a drainer’. This confirmation made it clear that the circulated link was not a community reward program, but a digital asset theft tool deliberately spread to trap users.

The danger lies in the technical mechanism behind the link, which requires no password theft to empty a victim’s wallet.

How Wallet Drainers Empty Victims’ Balances

A wallet drainer operates as a malicious smart contract or application specifically designed to exploit transaction approval features across the Web3 ecosystem. Victims are typically guided to a spoofed website resembling the official interface, where they are asked to connect their crypto wallets to claim the airdrop. When the claim button is pressed, the application requests token approval permissions for assets held in the wallet. Once the victim signs the approval, the malicious code instantly takes full control and transfers the entire token balance to the attacker’s address without further confirmation.

This modus operandi repeats a longstanding pattern of scams that frequently emerge amidst crypto airdrop trends. Attackers take advantage of Shiba Inu’s status as one of the digital market’s largest memecoin communities. Token holders’ enthusiasm to receive free allocations is frequently exploited by cybercriminals, particularly when fraudulent links are circulated across various community channels.

Recovery Steps and Unknown Loss Figures

Users who have already interacted with the fake airdrop link were urged to act quickly by the developer team. Wallet owners must immediately access a Web3 management service and revoke all contract approvals previously granted. This revocation cuts off the smart contract’s access to the wallet balance, stopping unauthorized withdrawals before any remaining assets can be moved by the perpetrators.

Regarding the financial impact, no official loss figures have been reported from this October 12 incident. The Shiba Inu team has not released an estimate of the value of lost assets, nor have they detailed how many wallet addresses connected their accounts to the malicious contract.

For token holders and airdrop hunters alike, the security principle is simple: reputable projects do not distribute free tokens via impromptu websites that demand wallet access permissions. The moment a suspicious contract approval is requested, that is where the scam begins.
