Spain has just recorded the largest fan token burn of the 2026 World Cup. Over 1.16 million SPAIN tokens - specifically 1,161,234 tokens valued at roughly $649,050 - were permanently removed from circulation shortly after La Furia Roja defeated Belgium 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
The burn is part of Chiliz’s “Burn to Glory” campaign, which directly links on-pitch results to the fate of each nation’s fan tokens. Every national team victory triggers the permanent removal of a portion of its supporting token supply - and that night, Spain’s win slashed the total supply of SPAIN tokens to just 27.25 million.
Spain Holds Strong at the Top of the Burn Leaderboard
With this latest addition, Spain now leads the tournament’s burn leaderboard with nearly 3 million tokens burned across the World Cup. They also become the first World Cup-affiliated team among Chiliz’s national team partners to reach the semifinals.
The 3 million mark is not merely symbolic. If Spain wins again in their semifinal clash against France, the campaign’s cumulative burn total will officially cross the 3 million token threshold - a record no country in the tournament has yet reached.
Belgium, despite being eliminated in the quarterfinals, remains in second place on the leaderboard with around 870,000 BELG tokens burned. Meanwhile, Argentina climbed the rankings after defeating Switzerland to advance to the semifinals, with 160,000 ARG tokens burned - and as an added bonus, Argentina’s treasury burn allocation increased from 5% to 7.5% following their qualification. Portugal concluded its run with 208,000 POR tokens burned before being knocked out by Spain in the round of 16.
Chiliz Expands Beyond the World Cup
The tournament’s momentum is being fully leveraged across the fan token ecosystem. Crypto exchange LBank introduced perpetual futures contracts for Argentina and Portugal fan tokens, with plans to add futures for major clubs such as Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Galatasaray, and Arsenal.
Chiliz itself is hosting weekly trading competitions through its Vibe Trading and Battle Trade products throughout the tournament. Off the pitch, the company is preparing to expand the Socios platform to US college sports fan tokens following regulatory approval, targeting a rollout during the 2026 college sports season.
Why the Burn Figures Are Worth Watching
What sets “Burn to Glory” apart from a mere marketing gimmick is its direct correlation: every victory reduces token supply, and shrinking supply is a language traders understand clearly. As long as Spain continues to advance, supply pressure on the SPAIN token will keep tightening. For fan token holders, the semifinal showdown against France is not just about securing a spot in the final - it is also about whether that 3 million token milestone will officially be reached.
