Tax Data of 678,000 French Citizens Leaked - Bitcoin Owners Targeted for Physical Attacks

Hackers are now selling the personal data of more than 678,000 taxpayers and businesses in France. The tax records, offered at a price of several thousand euros, were stolen from the systems of the French tax authority, DGFiP, in a security breach last June.

Reports from the French cybersecurity outlet FrenchBreaches regarding the leak have been confirmed. DGFiP officially acknowledged the intrusion into their information systems. The attackers exploited stolen VPN credentials and internal search tools to extract the data. The exact number of affected individuals is currently still under investigation.

The leaked information contains critical details of citizens. The data package includes names, birth details, home and email addresses, phone numbers, and income figures. It also includes withholding tax rates, family status, dependents, and tax-share information. Such detailed tax data allows attackers to craft phishing messages that are far more convincing than generic fake emails.

Target Map for Physical Attacks

For ordinary citizens, the incident is a privacy violation. But for crypto owners, this leak is a direct threat to physical safety. The combination of tax data and knowledge of crypto ownership creates an accurate target map for criminals to carry out real-world attacks.

Casa CSO Jameson Lopp reacted to the incident on platform X. “More bad news for Bitcoiners living in the country with the highest rate of physical attacks. The French tax authority has been hacked, and 678k records leaked,” he wrote. France is indeed recorded as the country with the highest number of crypto theft cases involving physical violence - or wrench attacks.

Industry data confirms this danger. A CertiK report noted that 33 out of 52 global physical attacks in the first half of 2026 occurred in France. A separate report from Chainalysis also reinforced a similar trend, finding that 30 out of 46 attacks up to June resulted in total losses exceeding $30 million.

Threat Shifts to Real Life

This case proves that a breach in the network defenses of state institutions can spill over into the loss of physical security guarantees for citizens in their own homes. When home addresses and financial profiles fall into the hands of crime syndicates, Bitcoin holders are no longer just dealing with the risk of computer hacking. Asset thieves now know exactly which door to knock on. Reported by Decrypt.
