Vitalik Buterin Tantang Elon Musk 'Rombak Total' X - Bukan buat Kripto, tapi buat Menjinakkan AI

Vitalik Buterin Challenges Elon Musk to ‘Completely Overhaul’ X - Not for Crypto, but to Tame AI

When the Ethereum co-founder penned an open letter to the owner of X, it wasn’t about coin prices. Instead, Vitalik Buterin urged Elon Musk to completely overhaul the platform - turning it into a place where ordinary citizens can help coordinate global artificial intelligence governance, rather than leaving crucial decisions entirely in the hands of governments and giant institutions.

In a July 11 thread, Buterin addressed Musk directly. If he were at the helm of the platform, he wrote, he would redesign X to help discover a “grand win-win bargain” on AI governance - a deal that gives more people a voice rather than centralizing power among a handful of governments, tech corporations, and prominent institutions.

Why Now

The proposal comes right as the AI race heats up. SpaceXAI recently released Grok 4.5, while OpenAI launched GPT-5.6. Ahead of Grok 4.5’s public release, Musk dubbed it an “Opus-class” model that is faster, more token-efficient, and cheaper. Buterin himself praised Community Notes and prediction markets on X as two of the most important social technologies for improving public knowledge - though he also cautioned that the same platform could turn into a tool for coordinated harassment if incentives are misaligned.

Three Conditions to ‘Hit the Brakes’

Most notably, Buterin outlined what he sees as the biggest debate around AI. One camp believes artificial superintelligence could emerge around 2040 unless development slows down drastically; the other views it as a routine continuation of technological progress and dismisses warnings of existential risk. While admitting uncertainty about the timeline, Buterin supported establishing concrete conditions that could temporarily hit the brakes on AI development. Examples include: the emergence of a super-pandemic, unemployment rates exceeding 25%, or lethal autonomous drones being deployed on a wide scale.

This is where crypto comes in. For the digital asset market, Buterin’s ideas point to a greater role for decentralized infrastructure. Prediction markets could be used to verify whether agreed-upon ‘triggers’ actually occur, while zero-knowledge technology and on-chain governance systems could step into the spotlight if institutions begin adopting more transparent decision-making. Interestingly, Buterin stopped short of calling for new AI regulation - instead offering a coordination framework between parties with differing views. It is a proposal that, as usual, forces us to rethink what this technology is truly being built for.
