Balaji Srinivasan, former Coinbase CTO and founder of the “Network School” community, has issued an open ultimatum to the Malaysian government: formally welcome us, or we leave. “If we are not welcome, there are many other countries that would welcome us,” he said in a video message addressed directly to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The threat did not come out of nowhere. It emerged right after Malaysian authorities began investigating Srinivasan’s community in Forest City, Johor.
The Trigger: Probe Into Israeli Nationals
Since Tuesday, the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs has been investigating the Forest City tech community over allegations of hosting Israeli nationals who illegally used second passports. However, initial inspections by authorities revealed the exact opposite: all 266 foreign nationals in the community held valid immigration documents.
Forest City, where Network School is based, is located just about an hour away from Singapore. The community was launched in August 2024 and marketed as a physical hub for tech builders, creators, and founders to gather and build.
What Balaji Is Actually Demanding
Balaji is not merely seeking clearance from the allegations. He is pursuing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian government, alongside an official document stating his community is “personally welcome” - not just an abstract declaration that “technology is welcome.” As leverage, he is withholding a planned $122 million follow-on investment for the community’s expansion until there are sufficient guarantees that similar incidents will not recur.
This case exposes the classic tension looming over many “crypto utopias”: digital-native communities striving to build their own institutions and economies, yet ultimately remaining reliant on the legal certainty of conventional nation-states. As long as immigration gates and permits remain in government hands, the dream of a borderless state still has to queue at very real rubber-stamp desks.
