A record $6.3 billion hack targeting Binance has shifted into political debate in Washington, turning the crypto exchange breach into a clash between Republicans and Democrats ahead of the US election on November 3, 2026.
President Donald Trump offered a cool response when asked about the incident during a Friday press conference, stating that the administration is monitoring the developing situation while noting the exchange’s pledge to guarantee customer funds. Meanwhile, Binance management stated that roughly $3 billion of the stolen funds had been frozen across multiple jurisdictions, also confirming that it had covered 90% of the losses using internal company cash and SAFU reserve funds.
Transaction-Freezing Bill on the Senate Table
Wyoming Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis seized on the incident to push for the passage of the Clarity Act, a bill stalled in the Senate since September 15, 2026, amid disputes over ethics clauses regarding digital asset ownership by public officials. Lummis emphasized that the legislation is vital to provide a legal framework allowing the crypto industry to freeze suspicious transactions immediately upon contact by law enforcement, thereby reducing the chances of funds being lost.
A similar warning was echoed by Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Michael Selig, who argued that the massive hack underscores the need for tighter regulation of offshore exchanges. According to Selig, overseas exchanges often operate without the oversight standards and investor protection mechanisms seen in US domestic financial markets.
Allegations Over Donations and Presidential Pardon
From the opposing side, Democratic Representative Maxine Waters launched sharp criticism, viewing the Binance breach as a warning against the deregulatory agenda of Republicans and Trump, which she argued weakens compliance mandates for the crypto industry.
Waters revisited past ties between the Trump family and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, alleging a connection between over $2 billion in donations flowing to World Liberty Financial and the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) decision to drop Zhao’s fraud case, followed by a full presidential pardon from Trump for the exchange founder.
Regulatory Stakes Ahead of November
For voters and crypto market participants, the debate surrounding Binance illustrates how the hack has been pulled directly into the vortex of power politics. Ahead of the November vote, these dynamics present a choice between accelerating legal protections for digital assets or tightening oversight on exchange operators.
