Binance’s $6.34B Breach Stemmed From Fake Job Interview - Withdrawals Kept Leaking During System Freeze

The $6.34 billion hack at Binance on October 29, 2026, was not a sudden breach, but the culmination of months of espionage and social engineering. An official investigation report published by the exchange on Tuesday (Nov. 3, 2026) revealed that the intrusion trail began mid-year through two distinct vulnerabilities.

The initial phase began in June 2026 when a Binance Wallet DevOps engineer downloaded a compromised Homebrew installation while searching for AI coding tools. The victim’s device was promptly replaced, but the attackers had already mapped out the exchange’s wallet team structure.

That team structure information was subsequently used by the hackers to stage their next intrusion scenario three months later.

Infiltration via Pyenv Tampering and Internal AI

In September 2026, the attackers targeted another software engineer via an official recruitment platform. Posing as job recruiters, the hackers used fake profiles to conduct a video interview and asked the victim to download a coding task onto their work laptop.

The coding task setup script quietly replaced the pyenv development tool with a malicious version. This change executed without triggering endpoint security systems.

On October 20, 2026, the hackers leveraged the infected laptop and Binance’s internal AI tools to infiltrate systems belonging to two wallet engineers. The perpetrators then stole credential tokens to deploy rogue system containers.

How Funds Kept Leaking During Withdrawal Freeze

Those stolen credentials were used on October 29, 2026, to launch rogue containers accessing the wallet-signing service. Between 20:05 and 20:09 UTC, the attackers drained five hot wallets, transferring 233.46 million XRP, 970,500 SOL, 44.2 million OP, and 18,270 BTC.

Binance immediately froze standard withdrawals, but the outflow did not stop. The hackers exploited Ethereum’s EIP-7702 mechanism to delegate malicious smart contract permissions to the “Binance 14” hot wallet. Asset transfers continued bypassing the exchange’s standard freeze.

Binance’s Multi-Party Computation (MPC) wallet architecture complicated emergency permission revocations due to the absence of a single private key. The delegation on Binance 14 was only fully neutralized on October 30 at 00:10 UTC.

57 Attacks Thwarted and 98% Fund Recovery

Binance co-founder and co-CEO Yi He announced that the security team had detected and thwarted 57 suspected North Korea-linked cyber threats throughout 2026. The prevented vectors included fake job interviews, malicious code packages, and spoofed video call applications.

The asset recovery rate reached 98% as of October 31, 2026, up from earlier updates of 90% and 95%. All major assets such as BTC, ETH, USDT, BNB, SOL, USDC, and XRP are 100% covered using SAFU funds and internal exchange reserves.

For users, the SAFU reserve fund guarantees full backing for the assets that were temporarily diverted, while this fake interview incident highlights the sophisticated intrusion tactics confronting the crypto industry.
