BNY dan Citadel Securities Tukar Treasury AS di Blockchain - Incar Pasar Repo Triliunan Dolar

BNY and Citadel Securities Trade U.S. Treasuries on Blockchain - Eyeing Trillion-Dollar Repo Market

BNY and Citadel Securities have completed a blockchain-based U.S. Treasuries transaction, marking the first time two top-tier Wall Street institutions have traded using tokenized sovereign debt directly.

U.S. Treasuries have long served as collateral for short-term borrowing and trading finance. In traditional markets, transferring collateral is often slow because assets must move across disparate systems.

What makes this trial significant is not just the underlying technology, but the velocity of capital it demonstrated.

Why Collateral Needs to Move Faster

Through this demonstration, both institutions proved that tokenized government bonds can move from settlement to financing significantly faster. More agile movement allows firms to reuse collateral sooner and free up cash liquidity for other trades.

Dan Doherty, digital assets operations lead at Citadel Securities, emphasized that the efficient movement of high-quality collateral forms the foundation of well-functioning markets. Doherty added that cutting transfer delays can improve how institutional markets operate.

Carolyn Weinberg, Chief Innovation & Market Transformation Officer at BNY, noted that utilizing tokenized U.S. Treasuries across settlement and financing paves the way for a more connected, efficient, and always-on financial system.

Tokenized Deposit Plans and Global Operating Hours

BNY plans to introduce expanded digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities to support blockchain-based settlement and financing. The world’s largest custodian bank is not limiting its upgrades to digital systems alone.

Operating hours for BNY’s traditional settlement systems for Federal Reserve securities and U.S. triparty transactions will also be expanded. The service is targeting European and Asian market trading hours next year to cut time lags between financial centers.

Targeting the Trillion-Dollar Repo Market

The focus of this transaction goes beyond ordinary tokenized equities. BNY and Citadel are targeting collateral management across repo and triparty markets, segments that see trillions of dollars turn over daily on Wall Street.

Across the broader market, digital asset adoption by major institutions is gaining traction. BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and JPMorgan have already launched tokenized funds and securities. In the retail sphere, Samsung enabled USDC transfers across 82 million phones, while the market capitalization of tokenized equities is approaching $3.3 billion after gaining 15% over the past 30 days.

The move by BNY and Citadel shows that blockchain adoption is beginning to reach the core operations of capital markets. When high-quality collateral can move instantly without being hindered by lengthy clearing delays, trillions of dollars in liquidity will no longer sit idle waiting in settlement queues.
