Circle Borong 1.000 Paten Blockchain IBM - Tapi Langkah Bungkam Mereka Bikin Startup Kripto Waspada

Circle Acquires 1,000 IBM Blockchain Patents - But Their Silence Leaves Crypto Startups Wary

Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, announced the acquisition of core assets from IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio on July 27. The scale of this acquisition is significant, covering the ownership of more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide.

The intellectual property purchased by Circle touches on various aspects of digital infrastructure. The patent list includes blockchain operating systems, financial services, banking, and insurance. In addition, there are also patents for supply chain verification systems and secure cloud operating procedures. Although the scope of the transferred assets is extensive, the financial value of the transaction was not disclosed to the public by either party.

What Are So Many Patents For?

The intended use of these patents centers on strengthening internal products. Circle is directing this acquisition to support the USDC ecosystem along with the Circle Payments Network infrastructure. Furthermore, these patents are also projected to support the operations of Circle’s Arc blockchain, while preparing a payment tool foundation for AI agents.

However, the source of the issue comes from what Circle deliberately left unmentioned in their release. The company did not detail whether the new patents would be licensed to other developers, used defensively, or enforced to attack other blockchain businesses. This lack of a clear stance immediately changed the reception tone among crypto industry players.

Crypto Startups Prepare for Potential Lawsuits

The lack of details regarding these deployment plans has triggered widespread concern among crypto startups. Many parties are wary that Circle might eventually use these patent documents as a legal basis to sue competitors with similar products.

The fear of technological monopoly is well-founded. Circle has not yet announced a defensive patent pledge (defensive patent pledge). Such legal protection pledges are standard documents commonly issued by other digital asset companies to provide assurances that patents will not be weaponized.

Lower Projections Weigh on Stock Performance

On the stock market, the initial reaction to the acquisition did not last long. Circle’s stock, trading under the ticker CRCL, briefly recorded a 2% gain after news of the patent purchase spread, but this trend quickly reversed.

The stock price fell again following the release of an analysis from Morgan Stanley. The prominent investment bank cut USDC supply estimates by a significant margin, lowering projections by 33% for 2027 and 44% for 2028.

Buying a thousand patents from an entity like IBM clearly secures Circle’s technological position in the stablecoin competition. However, without a legal pledge protecting third-party innovation, that stack of intellectual documents will continue to be viewed as a silent weapon that could threaten anyone.
