A Canadian jury has begun deliberations to decide the verdict for Aiden Pleterski, the young man who dubbed himself the ‘Crypto King’. Deliberations commenced following closing arguments this week. Pleterski is accused of orchestrating a digital asset Ponzi scheme that cost his social media followers up to $30 million between 2021 and 2022.
Presiding Justice Shaun Nakatsuru delivered final legal instructions to jurors before they retired to the closed-door deliberation room. Pleterski now faces a maximum sentence of up to 14 years in prison if found guilty of large-scale fraud charges.
What makes the trial unusual is not just the scale of the losses, but Pleterski’s decision to proceed without legal counsel.
Defending Himself Without Legal Counsel
Pleterski has faced fraud charges since 2024 and waited over two years for his trial. Instead of hiring a professional attorney, he chose to represent himself before the judge and jury throughout the criminal proceedings.
That resolve held through closing arguments this week. In his final defense, Pleterski maintained his innocence. He even told the court that had he not been forced to defend himself without counsel, his innocence would have been proven at trial.
Pleterski’s prosecution adds to a growing list of law enforcement crackdowns on crypto industry figures. The aggressive legal action follows the 25-year prison sentence handed down to former FTX chief Sam Bankman-Fried in 2023.
Kidnapping Following Investment Losses
Long before his case reached a criminal courtroom, Pleterski’s investment scheme sparked physical violence. In 2022, Pleterski was abducted and tortured by five men. Some of the kidnappers were investors who had lost funds in his digital asset scheme.
The kidnapping was handled in a separate criminal case. One of the captors, Deren Akyeam-Pong, pleaded guilty in court to nine criminal charges and is currently awaiting sentencing.
For the social media followers who lost up to $30 million, this week’s jury deliberations mark a decisive chapter in a long wait since 2021. Whether Pleterski walks free through his self-defense or faces up to 14 years behind bars, the final outcome now rests in the hands of the jury behind closed doors.
