Google introduced a crypto custody security system dubbed Google Multi-Party Compute (MPC) at its inaugural digital assets symposium in New York City on October 28, 2026. The product is currently in private preview and slated for general commercial availability in early 2027, though its pricing structure has not yet been announced.
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has begun leveraging Google MPC technology to secure its own digital assets on the Ethereum and Solana blockchains. Alongside this internal deployment, several design partners and major banking institutions are reportedly testing the system to safeguard crypto and tokenized real-world assets (RWAs).
A Purpose-Built Custody Solution, Not a DIY Setup
The debut of Google MPC marks a strategic shift in Google Cloud’s infrastructure offerings. Previously, banking clients using Cloud KMS or Cloud HSM had to design and build their own crypto custody architectures from scratch without an integrated package.
The new offering cuts through that complexity as a purpose-built custody tool. Within a single platform, Google MPC unifies three essential functions: MPC-based transaction signing, institutional policy enforcement, and key recovery mechanisms.
MPC technology works by splitting private keys into multiple cryptographic shares. These fragments are then distributed across separate, independent machines. Through this distribution, a complete private key is never stored on a single device during transaction validation, eliminating a single point of failure.
Why Private Keys Are Prime Targets for Theft
Chainalysis data underscores the urgency of safeguarding private keys: compromised private keys accounted for 43.8% of all stolen crypto assets throughout 2024. Single-key vulnerabilities have continually proven to be an easy target for cybercriminals to exploit.
DeFiLlama metrics illustrate an even broader scope of losses. As of June 2026, cumulative losses from exploits across the decentralized sector reached $16.69 billion. Fully 40% of those multibillion-dollar losses stemmed directly from private key theft.
These security risks remain a top concern for financial institutions exploring digital assets. Rich Widmann, Director of Digital Assets Strategy at Google Cloud, emphasized that asset tokenization adoption among financial institutions has reached an inflection point and demands battle-tested infrastructure to safeguard client assets.
Awaiting Full Commercial Rollout in Early 2027
Alphabet’s direct deployment on the Ethereum and Solana blockchains provides a real-world stress test for the system’s resilience ahead of its public launch. For the banks and asset managers currently piloting Google MPC, this private preview phase serves as crucial preparation before full commercial access opens in early 2027.
