US Election Watchdog Paralyzed by Hack - Tens of Millions in Crypto Super PAC Spending Reports Stalled

The US Federal Election Commission (FEC) electronic filing system went offline Tuesday at 19:48 UTC following a cyberattack, just six days ahead of the 2026 US Midterm Election Day. An FEC spokesperson stated that IT staff are actively working to restore services, while a Reuters report confirmed an internal email indicating the agency’s website was targeted by hackers.

The outage struck during the most critical window for campaign finance oversight in the United States.

Stalled 24-Hour Reporting Rules

Federal election regulations require Super PACs to report any expenditure of $1,000 or more within 24 hours during the 20-day period leading up to an election. With the FEC’s digital reporting portal paralyzed, public oversight of last-minute cash flows was immediately severed.

Prior to the system going down, public FEC data showed zero expenditure filings since Sunday from the leading crypto Super PAC coalition: Fairshake, Defend American Jobs, Protect Progress, Fellowship, and the Digital Freedom Fund. This reporting lull was already visible in the public database shortly before the hack severed access to the agency’s website.

Spending Footprint in Ohio, Texas, and California

Before the servers were disrupted, the digital asset industry’s donor coalition had already poured massive funds into several key race arenas. Fairshake reported $56 million in media expenditures opposing incumbent Sherrod Brown and backing Jon Husted in Ohio. In the same race, the Digital Freedom Fund posted over $7 million in media spending.

Fairshake’s move in Ohio mirrors its playbook from the previous cycle. In the 2024 elections, the committee deployed around $41 million to oppose Senator Sherrod Brown’s re-election bid against Bernie Moreno.

Political spending also extended to other jurisdictions. The Digital Freedom Fund, a PAC founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, reported spending more than $572,000 on Sunday for Republican Senate candidate text-messaging campaigns, primarily backing Ken Paxton in Texas. Meanwhile, Protect Progress recorded its latest spending of over $50,000 on direct mail campaigns supporting Representative Aisha Wahab in California.

Capital Push After September Bill Stalls

This campaign mobilization traces back to legislative dynamics in Washington. In September 2026, the US House failed to pass a comprehensive crypto market structure bill. That setback triggered a surge in political funding from industry players seeking to elect pro-crypto lawmakers to Congress.

Until the FEC system is restored, the public and voters in key battleground states remain in the dark about how much additional capital these political groups are pouring into the final days of the race.
