An FBI agent with a Top Secret security clearance is facing charges for stealing $1 million in cryptocurrency from a suspect’s wallet. Patrick Steven Yaroch, a supervisory special agent assigned to the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division, was officially indicted on Friday, August 1, 2026. He faces charges of interstate transportation of stolen property and receipt of stolen property.
The theft, which has embarrassed the federal agency, did not happen overnight. The scheme spanned from early 2025 to July 2026. Utilizing his access clearance, Yaroch breached the FBI’s internal systems to obtain the seed phrase of a crypto wallet. The wallet was held as evidence in a special investigation involving an “unnamed foreign adversary” entity. To ensure no physical copy was left in the office, Yaroch chose to memorize the entire recovery phrase sequence by heart.
After securing the keys to the digital vault, he was free to create a new crypto wallet and began draining the funds. He executed the transfers of the coins across approximately 10 separate transactions. This series of transfers eventually brought the total value of assets in his personal wallet to over $1 million.
How the Chatbot Exposed His Plan
His efforts to cover his on-chain tracks were ultimately undone by the search history on his own phone. Investigators examining Yaroch’s device discovered a chat history with ChatGPT that clearly documented his ambitions. On May 28, he queried the AI on how to invest $1 million in cash “to maximize profit.”
A few days later, the direction of his questions shifted from investments to relocation plans. He inquired about the procedures for leaving the United States and how to secure residency or citizenship status in the European Union. The inquiries expanded into cross-border immigration details. He checked the requirements for transit visas in Turkey for U.S. citizens, and even used ChatGPT to draft a job application email in Greece.
Document Trail Leading to Portugal
This intent to build a new life in Europe was reinforced by physical findings outside of his devices. Authorities found a family vacation itinerary to Portugal booked for September 2026. The plan was also supported by the existence of a legal power-of-attorney document managing affairs in Portugal.
The entire plan collapsed at his workplace. On July 31, 2026, Yaroch’s journey ended in arrest after he surrendered and confessed to his actions directly to fellow agents at FBI headquarters. To the colleagues interviewing him, he insisted that he had no intention of moving the stolen money to Portugal, though he still hoped his wife and child could go and enjoy their vacation there. The best encryption code is powerless when the actor who memorized it wears an FBI badge on his chest.
