Ostium Kehilangan 23,75 Juta USDC Akibat Laporan Harga Palsu - Ironisnya Smart Contract Mereka Sama Sekali Tak Tersentuh

Ostium Loses 23.75 Million USDC to Fake Price Reports - Smart Contracts Left Completely Untouched

Perpetual trading DeFi protocol Ostium lost 23.75 million USDC in a July 2026 exploit. The attacker did not breach smart contracts, but instead penetrated the protocol’s off-chain infrastructure to inject fake BTC-USD price reports via the system’s registered PriceUpKeep forwarder.

This vulnerability highlights a frequently overlooked weak point: off-chain supporting infrastructure.

A Low-Cost Test Run Before Repeated Drains

Blockchain security firm Blockaid previously identified that the protocol’s oracle signer private key had been compromised. Armed with this access, the attacker initiated the exploit with a small test trade worth 100 USDC. This price manipulation yielded an artificial paper profit of 897.8 USDC. Once the tactic proved effective, the attacker transferred 11.9 million USDC to a recipient wallet, followed by six consecutive additional exploit cycles.

Total net losses from the OLP vault reached 23.75 million USDC. Trader collateral was confirmed to be unaffected by the price manipulation. The draining halted when Ostium’s automated monitoring system flagged abnormal activity and immediately restricted further withdrawals. Trading channels were promptly shut down and only resumed operations on July 23 after migrating all operations to a new production environment.

A Previously Smooth Nasdaq Partnership

Prior to the attack, Ostium boasted an established track record, having processed over $50 billion in cumulative trading volume. Its market standing had also strengthened after announcing a partnership with the Nasdaq exchange in May 2026 to provide perpetual equity market data. The protocol is backed by approximately $27.8 million in total funding from major investors including General Catalyst, Jump Crypto, Coinbase Ventures, Wintermute, and GSR.

Recovery Efforts Still in Limbo

The incident clearly demonstrates that DeFi protocol security does not rely solely on smart contracts, but is also entirely dependent on off-chain infrastructure resilience. Currently, Ostium is finalizing a fund recovery plan for liquidity providers (LPs) and has promised to release details at a later date. For LPs whose funds vanished from the OLP vault, this roadmap will decide the fate of their assets.
