The Solana Foundation has officially scheduled the rollout of its major Alpenglow upgrade on the Solana mainnet for October 21, 2026. The update aims to slash transaction finality times to around 150 milliseconds, replacing the TowerBFT consensus voting system used since the network launched in 2020.
This move brings a unique side effect: Solana’s on-paper total transaction count is expected to plunge sharply on activation day, even though transaction volume and user activity will remain normal.
Validator Votes Removed from Blocks
The drop in figures stems from an overhaul of how validators process consensus. For the past six years, Solana validators submitted votes as regular transactions inside blocks, a pattern that automatically inflated the network’s daily transaction tallies. Under Alpenglow, validators will no longer submit votes into blocks, instead exchanging votes directly and aggregating them into approval certificates within one or two rounds.
Removing voting transactions from blocks will cause total transaction charts on block explorers to show a steep drop once Alpenglow goes live. However, this shift is purely a technical accounting adjustment. All trading activity, token transfers, and user interactions across decentralized applications will continue normally without disruption.
Gradual Transition in Epoch 1064
The migration is scheduled to take place during epoch 1064, expected to begin around 15:00 UTC on October 21, 2026. The shift will not happen instantaneously in order to preserve network stability. Solana will maintain the legacy TowerBFT system for the first 5,000 slots - about 18 minutes - of epoch 1064 before transitioning fully to Alpenglow.
Validator operators are required to run software based on Agave 4.3.0 to participate in the migration. Alternative validator clients Firedancer and Frankendancer do not yet support this initial transition, meaning operators of both clients must temporarily switch to Agave so their nodes remain in sync with the mainnet.
The validator fee structure is also changing alongside the consensus overhaul. The voting fee of roughly 1 SOL per epoch will be eliminated and replaced by a fixed registration fee of 0.8 SOL per epoch, streamlining the routine obligations of node operators.
Faster Certainty for Merchants and Bridges
At the infrastructure level, transaction finality of around 150 milliseconds gives merchants and cross-chain bridge protocols faster certainty that transactions cannot be reversed. Bridge operators will no longer need to hold transfers for extended periods simply to ensure blocks do not experience rollbacks or reorganizations.
For regular users, this speedup cuts wait times when interacting with on-chain applications. If Solana’s daily transaction count on monitoring dashboards appears to plummet on October 21, don’t be fooled into thinking the ecosystem has lost traction - the network simply removed voting transactions from its block tallies.
