Ripple Partners With First South Korean Securities Firm - Testing Capital Market Custody Without XRP Requirement

Ripple officially signed a partnership agreement with South Korea’s Meritz Securities on October 14, 2026, to explore institutional crypto custody and asset tokenization. The deal marks Ripple’s fourth institutional partnership in South Korea in 2026 and its first with a securities firm, following previous collaborations in the banking and insurance sectors.

The move represents more than just an expanding partner roster, serving as technical groundwork for Meritz before offering digital asset instruments directly to capital markets.

New Trajectory Toward Spot ETFs and a Won Stablecoin

Meritz Securities is evaluating Ripple Custody’s infrastructure across three core operational functions: digital asset storage, transfers, and settlement. The system evaluation is designed to support capital market operations requiring rigorous security and compliance standards.

The technical trials serve as preparation for Meritz to broaden its service portfolio into digital assets. The securities firm is gearing up to expand into spot crypto ETFs, fractional investment products, security token offerings (STOs), and a proprietary digital asset trading platform.

Beyond investment instruments, Meritz is also weighing the potential for a Korean won-denominated stablecoin. However, as of the signing of the agreement, management has not confirmed any official issuance plans.

Byungha Kang, Managing Director of the Strategic Planning Unit at Meritz Securities, explained that the collaboration combines Meritz’s securities market expertise with Ripple’s financial technology. Implementation will roll out in phases aligned with the development of South Korea’s regulatory framework.

Why Ripple Custody Does Not Mandate XRP

Underpinning the technical integration, Ripple Custody operates on a flexible multi-blockchain architecture. This infrastructure does not bind Meritz to using the XRP asset, the RLUSD stablecoin, or the XRP Ledger (XRPL) network to process its securities transactions.

Fiona Murray, Managing Director of Ripple Asia-Pacific, noted that Ripple’s technology currently encompasses payment solutions, custody, and tokenization. Ripple operates in over 60 markets and holds more than 85 regulatory licenses globally.

Ripple’s custody capabilities have seen enhancements since the beginning of the year. In February 2026, Ripple integrated Securosys key management technology and embedded Figment’s institutional staking services to expand system capacity.

Launch Timeline Still Held Up by Regulations

To date, neither party has announced a commercial launch date or the financial terms of the partnership. Meritz remains focused on completing its infrastructure feasibility testing prior to rolling out products to the public.

For South Korean financial industry participants, Meritz’s move sends a clear signal: the securities firm is choosing to fortify its technical vaults before official crypto product regulations are enacted.
