Node operators on the Pi Network face a deadline today, October 13, 2026, to update their software ahead of the Protocol 28 rollout to Mainnet on October 16. In the open market, the PI token is trading around $0.08042, down 7.32% over the past week and still lingering 97.3% below its all-time high of $2.99.
The gap toward its all-time low of $0.07059 according to CoinGecko has narrowed significantly. The market has yet to show conviction that technical upgrades can lift prices without tangible proof of real adoption.
What Protocol 28 Actually Delivers
Community posts on X and Testnet observations show that Protocol 28 introduces improvements to transaction data processing. This new feature provides tools for developers to update batches of smart contracts simultaneously.
The 2026 development roadmap kicked off with Protocol 19.6 in February, followed by versions 19.9 and 20.2 in March. Laying the smart contract groundwork for subscription models, escrow, and digital asset issuance arrived via Protocol 20. In July, Protocol 25 introduced the BN254 and Poseidon hashing algorithms to support zero-knowledge proofs, before developers finalized Protocols 26 and 27 on the path to version 28.
Some community members have described this phase as a potential massive turning point. However, that claim comes strictly from the community; the Pi Network core team has never issued an official statement with a similar narrative.
Exploring a Stablecoin With the Open Standard Consortium
Beyond core code updates, Pi Network is exploring a partnership with Open Standard, the company behind the Open USD (OUSD) stablecoin. Under this arrangement, Pi Network maintains that the PI token remains the ecosystem’s primary crypto asset, while the stablecoin is designated for commerce and payment services requiring price stability.
Open Standard oversees a consortium comprising more than 200 companies. Nevertheless, technical details of the integration have not been made public: the project team has yet to announce partner eligibility criteria, payment frameworks, or a confirmed launch date for OUSD on the Pi Mainnet.
Indicator Pressure and the $0.075 Support Threat
Technical indicators suggest downward momentum remains intact. The MACD shows the main line at -0.00260 and the signal line at -0.00192, resulting in a histogram of -0.00068. The PI token price also continues to trade below all four key Exponential Moving Average (EMA) lines.
The nearest support level now sits at $0.075. Losing ground at this support level would weaken any price recovery structure and risk a retest of its all-time low. For PI token holders, the node software upgrade is merely an operational matter; price trajectory still hinges on real transactional confirmation in the market.
