Strategy Pauses Bitcoin Buys for a Week - Diverts $176M Cash to Discounted Shares

The purchasing pace of the largest corporate Bitcoin holder has taken a breather. For the period of August 31 to September 7, 2026, Strategy announced that it neither bought nor sold any Bitcoin.

Instead, the company deployed its cash internally. Strategy diverted treasury funds to repurchase 1,810,885 shares of STRC preferred stock worth $176.3 million. The transaction was executed at an average price of $97.36 per share.

Eliminating a 12 Percent Dividend Obligation

The share repurchase is rooted in operational efficiency calculations. STRC preferred shares, officially designated as Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock, carry a par value of $100 and impose a 12% annual dividend obligation on the company. By redeeming millions of shares below the $100 par value, Strategy trimmed future dividend obligations while securing an immediate gain for its balance sheet.

Alongside the share buyback, Strategy’s board of directors formally expanded the authorization for its Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program. The program’s limit was doubled from an initial cap of $1 billion to $2 billion.

Two Billion Dollars in Remaining Equity Capacity

The one-week crypto buying pause left the core portfolio volume unchanged. The company’s total Bitcoin holdings currently stand at 845,050 BTC. These assets were accumulated at a total cost of $63.73 billion, placing the average purchase price at $75,412 per coin.

The company’s capital structure also retains substantial reserve capacity. The remaining authorization for the preferred stock buyback program stands at $1.19 billion. At the same time, the separate buyback allocation for MSTR common stock remains fully untouched with a $1 billion limit.

For market observers tracking institutional cash flows, the move reflects two-way asset management. While pausing liquidity injections into the Bitcoin market, Strategy deployed hundreds of millions of dollars in cash to clean up high-cost obligations from its balance sheet.
