Swedia Dulu Anggap Remeh CBDC - Kini Riksbank Desak Aturan Krona Digital Hadapi Euro dan Dolar

Sweden Once Downplayed CBDCs - Now Riksbank Urges Digital Krona Rules to Counter Euro and Dollar

Sweden’s relaxed stance on central bank digital currencies officially came to an end in October 2026. Sweden’s central bank, the Riksbank, submitted a formal letter dated Oct. 7, 2026, to the parliamentary Committee on Finance, which was made public on Oct. 15, 2026. Its recommendation was clear: parliament must promptly draft a legislative framework for the potential issuance of a digital krona.

The move reverses the conclusions of an official Swedish government inquiry conducted three years ago. At the time, the inquiry committee found no pressing need for Sweden to launch a central bank digital currency (CBDC). However, shifts in international payment dynamics over the past three years have rendered that previous assessment obsolete in the eyes of the central bank. What altered the landscape was not merely technological trends, but Sweden’s bargaining position against foreign currency forces.

Pressure from the Digital Euro and Dollar Stablecoins

The most immediate catalyst comes from the European Central Bank’s (ECB) digital currency project. Eurozone authorities are now accelerating their roadmap, scheduling a digital euro pilot for 2027 with a projected public launch in 2029. The introduction of a digital euro is seen as having direct implications for Scandinavia, which directly borders the European single market.

The Riksbank warns that Sweden’s domestic payment system risks losing its competitive edge without a national currency-denominated digital instrument comparable to the digital euro. Should payment ecosystems in neighboring countries become fully integrated into modern central bank digital infrastructure, concerns mount that Swedish market participants could become increasingly reliant on foreign currencies.

Central bank concerns do not stop at the euro. The Riksbank also warned of the long-term threat posed by the widespread adoption of foreign US dollar-denominated stablecoins. If Swedish citizens and businesses grow accustomed to using dollar stablecoins for everyday transactions, the krona’s position could be sidelined on its home turf. The influx of private dollar-based instruments is seen as potentially eroding Sweden’s monetary sovereignty over time.

How Long Would a Digital Krona Take to Materialize?

The Riksbank’s urgency in pressing parliament to act now boils down to the timing factor. The technical process of designing and deploying a digital krona is estimated to take at least five years, on top of the time required to overhaul national legislation. If parliament waits until the digital euro is already in circulation before beginning legislative discussions, Sweden will fall years behind.

For Swedish citizens and businesses, the Riksbank’s move exposes the limits of the private cashless payment system they have long taken pride in. Leaving digital currency circulation entirely to foreign platforms or dollar stablecoins means relinquishing control over the nation’s own currency. Parliament’s choice is now straightforward: begin legislative discussions this year, or prepare to watch the krona get sidelined at home.
