Tokenized stocks are 1.5 times more volatile than conventional shares on regular exchanges. The findings were published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on October 8, 2026, in a report titled “Scaling Tokenization: New Efficiencies, New Vulnerabilities,” which forms Chapter 3 of the October 2026 Global Financial Stability Report. The international monetary institution monitored 11 trading platforms over 365 days, totaling more than 2 million observations. The study focused on five of the most liquid US tokenized equity products: Tesla, Nvidia, Alphabet, the S&P 500, and a Nasdaq-linked instrument.
The IMF research revealed that more than 50% of tokenized stock trades actually occur outside regular US market hours, between 4:00 PM and 9:30 AM Eastern Time (ET). While conventional exchanges are closed, activity on blockchains continues uninterrupted. Around 80% of transactions in this market involve less than one full share, reflecting strong retail investor appetite for fractional ownership. However, this heightened overnight volatility is far from aimless noise.
Where Overnight Prices Flow
Conventional markets do not ignore overnight blockchain transactions. IMF data shows that between 87% and 99% of overnight price moves in tokenized markets are absorbed by conventional stock prices within the first 5 minutes of the New York market opening. This rapid absorption rate provides a strong signal that after-hours token trading carries valid price discovery information for the underlying traditional market.
Despite this price accuracy, liquidity is unevenly distributed across venues. Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) registered the highest volatility alongside the thinnest liquidity among the analyzed platforms. Market concentration is also heavily clustered: Ondo Finance and Backed Finance, through its xStocks product line, control more than 70% of global tokenized equities in circulation.
Small in Equities, Expanding Across Real-World Assets
The market value of tokenized stocks currently stands at around $2.3 billion. This figure is minuscule compared to the $160 trillion total global equity market capitalization. Yet, this small equity niche is merely a fraction of the broader wave of real-world assets (RWA) migrating onto distributed networks. The total tokenized RWA market, excluding stablecoins and repos, surpassed $65 billion as of July 2026, backed by $30.4 billion in tokenized private credit instruments and $17.5 billion in money market funds.
Mainstream financial players are now accelerating integration efforts. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and its parent company, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), are partnering with OKX to build infrastructure for 24/7 continuous tokenized stock trading. On another front, Securitize expanded its reach by bringing tokenized shares of Nvidia, Apple, and Amazon to the Solana blockchain.
Guardrails for Round-the-Clock Trading
Observing the increasingly tight connection between crypto order books and traditional exchanges, the IMF recommended that financial regulators take swift action. The institution advised authorities to consider implementing automated trading halts (circuit breakers) specifically tailored for 24/7 markets, accompanied by stricter oversight of risk transmission channels into legacy financial systems.
For investors taking advantage of weekend or overnight trading, tokenized markets offer flexible trading hours and low capital requirements through fractionalization. However, the 1.5x volatility premium serves as a reminder that after-hours liquidity remains thin and prone to slippage before Wall Street’s opening bell rings.
